Jay Sankey's: Revolutionary Card Magic

Postby panther1004 » Dec 28th, '04, 10:15

Gosh, hasn't it been a long time since I roamed the forums?

Anyway, I'm here to do a review so it's a review I'm doing.

Name: Jay Sankey's: Revolutionary Card Magic

Price: $59.95, about 30-40 quid no?

Where to buy: Penguin Magic

Review: Now this DVD is great. 28 Amazing Effects. 17 Brilliant Card Sleights. Don't expect to add all the tricks to your arsenal, but some you will love. Heres a bit lifted of the back of the dvd..

Assault with a Deadly Weapon: The selection appears in a borrowed salt shaker!
Tracking Device: A shirt button vanishes and is found SEWN to the face of the selection!
Missing Evidence: Without a doubt, one of the strongest torn and restored cards ever!
Threadbare Rise: Cause as many cards as you want to rise out of an examined deck without threads, magnets, or rubber bands!
Blaze of Glory: The signed card appears in a ball of fire! (Beat that!)
Ubercharge: A card changes even though it bares the spectator's initials on its face! (Read that again.)
Fort Knox: The signed card is found inside a folded envelope resting inside the card case!
In Captivity: Two cards change places despite one of the cards being wrapped in electrical tape!
Nosferatu: A vampire card impaled with a 5-inch nail remains unharmed!
Chain Gang: A selected card escapes under lock and key!
Cardivores: Jay's insanely clean version of Roy Walton's "Cannibal Cards."
Paper Cut: The "torn and restored transpo" Jay closes shows with!

And this is only, what twelve of the effects included on the dvd?! These are only a few and there are a lot better. If you are into cards, and wanna move on from slightly, lets say more beginner effects, and you've purchased some packet tricks etc... GET THIS DVD! You will love it.

PROS: :D some great ideas, tricks, and sleights that CANNOT be missed. (I LOVE THE MERCURY CARD FOLD! dont know why..)

CONS: :( hmm for some reason.. there are some cheesy, bits, you'll see what I mean, like in blaze of glory (I think) he uses.. A Can of Pam! America's favourite cooking spray! instead of a speccys hand.

It isnt performed infront of an audience.

The sound quality, in the lobby (some is filmed in magic store, some in a random lobby) is poor.. and In the magic shop his whole body doesnt fill the screen the the camera pans up and down to see his hands, and sometimes you cant see them!

Pricy DVD (Well its two dvds one with performances, other with explantions and slights.

Seems to be a lot of cons but most are techinal, the content on the dvd is astounding.

Content: 9/10 (You wont like it all)
Quality of DVD: 5/10 (Could be better!)
Price: 8/10 (Fairly pricy, but you get two dvds, which are great.)

Overall: 8.5/10 :D

From what i heard, Penguin tried to push this DVD set out as quickly as they could, but still, im a complete Jay Sankey nut, and love all of his stuff, its so simple and can be used in any situation.

Looking through my walk around trick list, i find that most of it is from Jay Sankey DVDs or products!

All hail Jay! All hail Jay!

I've never seen a magic DVD which wasn't region-free.
There never any reason to restrict audiences of magic DVD's.

sankey tends to use a camcorder and builtin mic or laple mic so thats why his shots and sound tend to be a bit ropey, but you have to remember that is part of his off the cuff style.
his explanations are definately street level with no fancy thrills or stage managed audience reactions, its all real world stuff.

if your a sankey nut or maybey started withb sankeys "oh my god" dvd then you will be familiar with his style of going off the wall and accent  .

if your a cardie then this dvd is a great intermediate work, i recomend it too. 8)

levi - please at least read the reveiws for posting questions like this.

If you are into cards, and wanna move on from slightly, lets say more beginner effects, and you've purchased some packet tricks etc... GET THIS DVD! You will love it.

If you have ordered the dvd. how about waiting for it to arrive and then writing a substantial post on your thoughts about it. Whether or not you agree with the original post and if you would recommend it to others. Also please wait until you ave had it for a few weeks and have actually watched it and tried out some of the effects.

If when it arrives, all you are going to say is "Great DVD I have this one. It's the best" - then please don't bother as it adds nothing to the topic.

I also is a complete sankey blobber.. or what you would call it.. and i have the rev. card magic.. it's really great at some points but there are some effects that like some other effects by sankey is a little nah-nah.. he teaches the tricks very well plus.. in the sleight section you get a close view on the classic pass, its psychology, how to keep your arms and everything you need to know on this, i would say pretty hard move.. :)

i would recommend it for the little better magicians.. mercury card fold, classic pass, one handed top palm etc.... not for complete beginners..
