Ring-flite?

Postby Amazing-magic » Jul 31st, '12, 13:25

Ok a couple of newbie questions. Firstly, how difficult is it to perform ring-flite close up? How much practice did you have to put in before you could do it well? I know every effect takes practice but some require more than others. As you can probably tell, I am a complete beginner when it comes to this effect.

Secondly, would it be a good idea to purchase an expensive one? Or are the cheaper ones useful as well?

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

NEVER purchase a cheap prop IF you are working. Does not pay in the end.

Ring Flight:
Several thing s have happened to some pro magician friends of mine with this.

1, The gimmick broke and the ring disappeared somewhere into the realms of the restaurant. Only found next day.

2. The expensive stone because of the strenght of the gimmick, came off the ring.

3, He presented the ring, on the key case hook, to the lady and she said' That is NOT my ring'. And it was one worth several thousand pounds!!
Took 20 minutes or more to convince her. Act ended suddenly.

The most SIMPLE method is Gaetan Bloom's. This works with a gimmick you already have.
It is so simple. All you need to buy is one of those key cases which (preferably) close with a snap at the opening. You squeeze the opening and it opens up.
I have done it with an ordinary key Case.
PM me.

I'd say Pro-Flite is probably the simplest I know of. It's low risk as it involves no fancy rigs etc. When you first get it, you feel a little cheated due to it's simplicity but when you try it on someone, it knocks their socks off. It's really good for the price and the ring on rope routine that comes with it complements it well. I know working magicians who wouldn't leave home without it.

First off research and practice some ring vanishes. Save your money for now and concentrate on that. You will need to perform a vanish so get on that straight away.

I own a ring flight revolution but i never use a ring that has expensive jewels in. Way too risky!

I felt decidely gibbed when I opened the case and realised what I'd bought, but it is a cracking routine and the ring on string routine that it fits into is brilliant. Very good stuff.

Agree with Allen re the above. Any 'Ring Flight' is only as good as the entertainment value. Almost no danger of any tragic results with this either. Several years ago I published my working routine with Gaetan Bloom's props.(Around 2005) The routine is used for table hopping conditions. The prop is still available from some dealers and doesn't cost the earth. Or DIY as Allen suggests. If you do buy . . . then don't expect a good working routine but just the basic handling. (Well, that was the case when I originally bought it).

If you are interested in a good comedy routine then I can look out my lecture notes. Unfortunately I don't have the routine on video but at a push I could most likely get it recorded. Cheers.

The offer of your lecture notes Mark is a generous one.

Strange that the magician--'newbie--amazing magic'- who first posted the question has never been back to the topic.????

To answer the other part of your question as to how much practice it requires. How can anybody answer this question. One can only answer how long 'they' practiced or rehearsed till they got it where they want it. You may as well ask 'how long is a piece of string'.

Here is the thing. Why does it matter how long it takes or how difficult it is? If you like the routine and it fits your style and you have a spot for it. Then take the time, do the research purchase top of the line (always) and put in the required time and effort it takes you to get to performance.

I'm sure the thread will be useful to other people though.

I've recently found my ring on string + flight is my favourite routine to perform for people. As a result, I've taken to learning more about ring magic and anything associated so I can add to it. I've found some coin sleights cross over nicely and so I'm learn coins for the first time too. :)

David Bonsall sometimes uses his Ring Flight Revolution with a coin. I saw him do it. The spectator signs the coin first of course.

My preference is a multi-phase ring and string routine. Far less to go wrong.
