Keeping Up To Date

Postby DaveM » Aug 13th, '12, 17:37

Where people look to keep up to date with the latest releases? I tend to read forums and Magicweek.co.uk only at the moment and find myself in the dark some what.

I thought a thread here might help others too.

I browse the "Latest and Greatest" section of the Magic Cafe...within an hour of a new product release people are talking about it presumptuously and trying to fish the method. Makes for hilarious reading.

"I want to do magic...but I don't want to be referred to as a magician." - A layman chatting to me about magic.

Most of the online magic dealers will add you to there mailing list, & you will recieve regular
up to date emails with regards to the latest products.

Check the cafe for latest and greatest, also subscribe to a few of the big dealers channels on youtube and whenever you log in there will be updated videos and trailers from the new releases.

Good tips!

I am not a fan of signing up to mailing lists as I don't fancy the spam that goes with the news. The signing up to youTube channels is a cunning idea though!

I admit to watching the Wizard Product Review weekly. Partly for keeping up to date, partly for entertainment...

I watch them mainly to remind myself that care in the community is alive and well. And, y'know, it's what all the kool kids do.

The magic shops all seem to promote the exact same products, which I think is a shame. Finding out about more obscure products is more difficult.

IMHO a professional's opinion of a new effect really isn't all that relevant - unless to other professionals. We amateurs have a different set of criteria which, by definition, they can't be expected to appreciate.

There are some which don't follow the herd like that and offer different items, many by well known names in Magic.

Bizarely, I think joining a forum like TM is the best step. I've searched through previous threads in my down time and I've found magical methods/utility devices that I didn't even know existed. It may sound cynical but I work on the principle that every 'move' in mentalism has already been invented. The best way to improve is to study the old classic texts and re-work the presentation. IMHO, most so called 'new' effects, aren't new at all. They are just re-hashes of old effects. If you buy PMM and 13 steps then you have the building blocks for some of the most amazing effects ever produced. Of course, building the confidence to do that only comes when you have an intimate knowledge of the field.

In my opinion the worst offender is Sankey, or as I call him, 'Skankey,' because in my opinion, he takes well known magical principles, (which can be found in a book for a few pounds) and then changes the presentation, and then sells it at a premium. In my opinion TM is THE ONLY PLACE on-line where you can actually get an honest opinion on a product. The Magic cafe is full of people promoting each others product irrespective of it's value. TM has people who'll tell it to you straight.

If anything is worth having it will be discussed by the boffins at TM!
