Token routine idea needed

Postby greedoniz » Aug 30th, '12, 10:11

Hello,

I have a "star Wars" themed wedding gig coming up and have been sent a commemorative coin they have had designed specially to give to all their guests.

Now, this "coin" is about the size of a poker chip and a fairly hefty weight for its size. Due to its size, weight and slippery surface it is an absolute stinker when it comes to classic palming.

So my question is this

What am I going to do with this coin that could serve as a short routine for mix and mingle?

You could do a routine with whatever coin you usually use but have it turn into the special coin at the end like you'd do with a jumbo coin. Alternatively, you could do something like a card to wallet but when you reveal the card, the coin is stuck to it. Or final load of cups and balls, sponge balls or whatever. If it just appears at the end, you could try to get away with not palming it but instead grabbing it from your pocket when they're not looking and sticking it wherever it needs to be.

Or...

Seeing as it's a Star Wars themed wedding, you could just 'force' it on to them.

What's the coin made of, just wondering if you could use 'The Force' to make the coin move in their hand?

I was wondering myself whether the coin is made of a material which could be influenced by certain fields. Unfortunately I don't have any test apparatus on me right now.

My other thought was the James brown 11p trick with the coin/token as the final load instead of the jam but I'm not sure the token is big enough to be impressive as a final load.

The other thing is I don't want to shoehorn this token into an effect just because it'd be nice to use it

I'm guessing you're going to be performing for groups at a time so to produce the token for every individual guest would be massively time consuming and would limit the amount of different effects you can do. Maybe you could do something where you produce a whole bunch of them in one go, maybe in a box or something, otherwise your act will just consist of handing out the coins in a variety of novel ways.

As a finale for the evening, you could show an empty treasure chest and then using your jedi powers ( :?: ) you fill it with the tokens!

Have a number of empty boxes that they can choose from, but using your 'Jedi Mind Trick' you make them discard, leaving them with the one box with the token(s) in.

Another thought, the other booby prize boxes could contain a photo of Jar Jar Binks!

You could have a whole bunch of booby prizes like a voucher for one free lesson at the Hayden Christensen School of Acting.

Second prize - two free lessons....

Probably not the best idea on the planet but I've seen a variation of the old pub trick where Mr Magic checks several beermats, rejecting them one by one until he finds one he likes, shows it to be normal then breaks it in half producing a pound coin from it explaining that it's a new promotional idea from the brewery, pound coins hidden in random beermats.. The version I saw was at a Wedding where one of the monogrammed paper serviettes was borrowed from one of the guests at the table, it was unfolded and shown to be empty, folded carefully into four then torn in half to produce a £2 coin.

too slipery to palm consider the jw grip or downs or heel clip for a vanish wilst they hold your wrists or just do a spellbound change.

coin in bottle using the coin could be fun, using a suitably opaque / translucent bottle and your favourate folder.

Some great ideas so far but I thought I'd add some more limiting factors.

1) I only have one coin

2) It's for walkaround so no big props

3) pretty much an instant reset

4) I have a month so it cant be a knuckle buster I'd need to learn

I'm a tough customer ain't I

drill a tiny hole on one face, at a 45 degree angle, and convert the coin into a hoo coin by fixing in a pin. This will enable you to do a few things with it, that sleights alone wont.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

Could we get an image of what the coin looks like?

Most things around star wars and the force calls for mentalism to be used and I know that's not your thing, but are there any mentalism books you've read as a point of reference?

You could do a reverse cup and ball's, or cup and coin, in this case and have a volunteer 'sense' which cup the coin us under, and whether it's face up or down, then you palm it under the cup.

You could write the number 7 or 37 on one side of the coin and test each table for who is best attuned to the force by guessing what number is written on the coin, and then move that into another effect.

If you have got it or are willing to spend the time and money on it you could look into Al Korans medallion.

Although really I think the best or most relatable effect will be something around the spectator moving the coin with their mind, if it's not magnetic then maybe something with invisible string or table tipping.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

Could you get the edges milled to make it easier to palm?
