Derren as you are aware started learning his hypnotism at uni, does anyone know what books he read or probably read primarily?

Thanks

And German.

Rest assured, he did all the usual tacky hypnosis routines, so it doesn't matter what book you read. Use your imagination and you'll get a lot further.

Infact, he and I share the same Alma Mater- although I read straight law (that's where our similarity ends!) :D

Forget what Derren read. Read Reality is Plastic (Anthony Jacquin), Deeper and Deeper (Jon Chase), Secrets of Stage and Cabaret Hypnosis (Eddie Burke) and Midnight Side of the Mind (Paul Voodini), then stop reading and start hypnotising. Or just read any one of those books, and start. There is too much reading done and too little practising when it comes to hypnosis.

And your results will improve dramatically once you realise that there is no such thing as hypnosis. Your job is to get someone to follow your instructions, not to put them into some dubious 'trance'. Bear that in mind and you will be all right.

Very useful information thanks.

It is important, as well, to realize that some of what Derren has done, even where it looks like hypnosis, is actually not hypnosis at all. One example in specific is the BMX routine with Simon Pegg. It is very clever, and when I was starting to get into mentalism, I didn't know how he did it. Now, the method is obvious. It is still very clever, but when you are more experienced, you can work it out.

I am not detracting from hypnosis in any way, just suggesting that if you are using Derren as your inspiration for exploring the subject, you may decide instead to stick to different classic mentalism texts.

You may find it easier to start of with pseudo hupnotism rather than
Hypnotism, this is where the subject feels they are undr hypnotism
But its wordplay or some other trickery and hokus pokus that is giving the illusion. Most hypnotist usually start of with psuedo hypnosis as tests to see who will
Be best to hypnotise.

I do concur with Mr Atlas, Mr Brown does often speak with a forked tongue and shouldn't always be believed.

It would very much be worth your while to aquire a basic text on the subject. Reality is Plastic has been suggested previously and would come highly recommended by me. My journey in hypnosis began with the small booklet, Practical Hypnotism by Ed Wolf. It costs in the region of £5 and is in no way a comprehensive text but it will give you a few basic ideas and point you in the right direction. Considering it's price it may be worth considering.

I know more or less about the other users, but since you are pretty new on the forum, I would be curious to know what text you consider classic. Also, if there is some specific text you are thinking of for the bmx trick (I have my ideas on the trick, but I am far too much inexperienced to tell whether these ideas are actually feasible).

Obviously, it really all starts with the 13 steps, then Annemann's "Practical Mental Magic", all of which inspired Phil Goldstein (now goes by Max Maven) in contemporary times. His color series is always lauded, but is Nothing when compared to his lisp series (in my opinion). T.A. Waters is also very clever, and "Mind, Myth, and Magic" is recommended reading. I also think Larry Becker has a place in what I think is "classic" mentalism texts, and Syzygy is a "contemporary classic" full of great ideas. From there, I would expect that you have the workings down and would benefit from an expansion of ideas regarding performance. Banachek's PS series does just this, and Wonder Words and Naked Mentalsim both help to create a better sense of reality.

I'm in love with Peter Turner's work at the moment. It is fresh, clever, and clean and I believe it could very well make it into the "contemporary classic" category in a decade or so.

As to Derren's BMX effect, PM me and we can chat.
