Thought of Triumph?

Postby JabJay » Oct 3rd, '12, 23:54

I really enjoy the triumph routine, I often perform Jerry Sadowitz's name a card triumph as it receives some great reactions. I was just wondering, after reading Pure Effect by DB, could you use a psychological force to then proceed with the triumph effect as per norm. A sort of thought of triumph?

Just wondering, thanks!

I guess you could but I'm not sure it would add any greater layers to the original effect. Personally, I don't like Triumph routines because they can't help looking like what they are - beautiful pieces of card magic brought about through sleight of hand. Most sensible audience members will recognise/sense this. This feeling that they 'know' how you did it severely limits it's impact. I always find that people are impressed in the same way that people are impressed by a speed racer doing a wheelie at 140 MPH. They like it, but they're not filled with wonder. The scant knowledge of sleights by the general public, coupled with youtube and the usual TV exposure stuff makes a decent mindblowing card trick hard to come by. Just my opinion, and I accept that others may take a totally different view!

Kev,

Can i disagree with you, i performed my take on Out of this World last night for the first time publicly, and the reactions i got were the best i have ever had for a card effect! People don't run off to YouTube to find out how a trick is done, most people enjoy it and then forget about it, or if you're good they'll call you up with a booking! :D

Back on topic, i quite like the idea of a thought of Triumph, could be quite fun! (although I'm sure Dynamo did it with Matt Horne)

Much love

Darwin Ortiz talks about how a thought of triumph is a lot weaker than a normal triumph to laymen in his book Strong Magic. I think he has some valid points but that doesn't mean it's not possible for certain performers.

I have to disagree completely with Kevmundo, I have performed Triumph for years and it's the one thing people ALWAYS ask to see again.

Look up Michael Vincent's performance on youtube, then look up Kostya Kimlat's, then look up David Williamson's and finally look up Ricky Jay performing it. You'll see some absolutely stunning reactions.

theres a thought of triumph on the Recall DVD by Tom Crosbie, its a beautiful routine. If you did want to do one though it would involve learning a mem deck. Might be worth seeing if theres a video about.

Thank you everyone for your kind responses! I do love triumph, at the moment I perform a version were a speck names any four of a kind and then it is found face up blah blah usual business. Intriguing though!

Another thing I like about the original is that the deck stays in memorised order or whatever order you want whilst performing it. Very useful.

James Brown has a good Thought Of Triumph routine on his professional opportunist dvd set.

Hi guys, I think the greatest triumph routine has got to be Vernon's. Its not a thought of card but with the correct patter that impression could be left. Also the sleight involved is done so overtly, spectators are left with no clue at all as to the method. The downside is its hard to do without a table, unless you can do an in hands f/riffle and strip
