A New Venture - Possibly

Postby Aza » Oct 15th, '12, 11:27

Hi all,

Just doing a bit of market research, how many of you want a showreel, but cannot afford to have a cameraman and editor etc. etc.

I am thinking about going into creating DVD's for amateurs and professionals alike, but at an affordable cost.

Would anybody use my services?

Much love

It's impossible to say without seeing the quality of your work?

Theoretically, depending on costs etc. I've got a couple of tricks that I use to teach / illustrate some of the Equality'n'Diversity training I give that other people would like clips of.

Basically what i was thinking was investing in a Canon HDV, tripod and some editing software and as long as my costs are covered i'd be able to offer a reasonable/cheap service to magicians who are outpriced by the bigger companies!

I've filmed a few things in my time fiftytwo, not mentionable on a public forum  tell you at the next magic meet!!

I'm pretty good with angles, and editing is a piece of p**s.....

Like i say this is going to be a venture to give people a chance to show off their material for an affordable price!

Almost all magician's promos I have seen are poor. They film in the "real" world but at events where it is dimly lit. Grainy footage, no off camera microphones, no real lights, lack of structure etc.
I think if you're going to film a promo it needs to have a lot of thought put into it, not just varying footage quality from a load of different gigs.

Take a look at Fergus Flanagan's recent promo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLGX640qGM4

Simple, effective. Nice little interview going on so you get a feel for him etc...
And what's more, it wouldn't take much to create a similar video.

I am a photographer by trade but occasionally am contracted to do some video work and if you market yourself to professionals, the video above
is what I'd expect to begin with.

I like the idea, but I wonder if a guy on a video forum saying he could go and buy s TT and an ID to offer magic services to people who can't afford a professional magician would appreciated...

Andrew,

You make a fair point, but considering a friend of mine was recently quoted in excess of £4,000 for a 4 minute showreel, is that value for money? honestly?

And it's only an idea....

If it brings in repeat business in excess of that £4000 then yes. If it presents a professional image of that magician and makes the right first impression then yes.

I can pick up a Haynes manual for £12, do you want me to service your car?

My very good friend is a photogropher and is doing some shots of me on Tuesday morning for my website/business cards/pop up banners etc. I know that my website (when it's up and running) will benefit from some vids/promo stuff. Iv'e had a look at what's out there and you're right in that it's ridiculously expensive. Now I could justify it if I was earning the big bucks. But unfortunately, most people starting out aren't earning that sort of money. I'd welcome a cheap alternative and if you want a guinea pig then I'm your man!!! Let me know if you take this venture further as I'd love to be a part of it!
