Name that move

Postby mrz0mbie » Dec 19th, '12, 12:37

This will be awkward as I'm weary of exposure so mods please feel free to edit.

Ok so Joe Monti taught me a move, it was a pass to get a chosen card from centre to the bottom. The deck is in the right hand, you get a P**ky B***k at your selection, create a step and take the deck in the left hand biddle grip. You then rotate the deck, regrip with the right hand and using the left hand for cover execute the pass.

Does this move ring any bells for anybody? He was generous enough to let me video a short tutorial and mentions it was taught to him by Derek Dingle, but I don't have any of Derek's literature and it's not in any of Joe's. I would love to find this explained further in any text.

Thanks for your help

I believe that the move you are describing is the "turnover pass". You could look in either The Royal Road to card Magic or expert card technique to find a step by step guide.

If not the turnover, it may also be a half pass, or a combination of the two.

At first I thought this was some kind of Midnight Shift, and had took the "rotating the deck" as meaning end for end. I see others have interpreted this as turning the deck over as in face-up, so now I'm not sure. There are similarities, albeit in a different order.

The description seems to be the opposite to what I'd expect - ie left handed.

Jim, I feel very silly now, I am "cack handed" and described it lefty!

Further to that you are right the deck is rotated end for end rather than face up. Where can I read more about the midnight shift?

Thank you

It's originally by Steve Draun so you can find it in his book "Secrets Draun from the Underground". Kaufmann also teaches it on the "On the Pass" DVD and although it's far from a perfect performance of the move, it's one of those moves that benefits from seeing it done.

I believe the earliest version was published in "Richard's Almanac" by Kauffman although I may be mistaken...it is essentially the Hermann pass but with a turn and raise of the hands to disguise the action. If done properly, it can be used as a colour change as it happens so quickly and smoothly.
