Original vs Variant

Postby BrianO » Jan 4th, '13, 11:11

So I am pretty new to Magic and have been doing a lot of reading and viewing on card magic over the last few months. One of the things that I have noticed is the naming of routines, tricks or sleights is quite varied.

Things that I would view as different handlings of the same sleight have very different names. Cardini and ego change would be an example of this. Maybe I am just looking at this from a juggling point of view where a base technique can be named but everyone can present it very differently and call it the same thing (more or less). (I have had this conversation on juggling forums also)

I think my question is...

Is it common practice within magic for people to name variants of techniques as original techniques?

There are often slight nuances or better handlings based on the original so yes, it is quite common.
