Book Tests - Impromptu

Postby Jordan C » Jan 8th, '13, 17:42

What's the best book test to be able to do an impromptu effect using ANY book, even one you haven't seen before. 100% spontaneous for when you get asked 'show us some magic then'!

I know one which uses two borrowed books, as shown in the Magic Makers "Amazing magic with everyday objects" DVD.

You know it?

No I don't. Ironically someone else has just revived an old thread about MOABT and a Magazine version. Keen to hear about all!

Tomo's naked book test is as impromptu as you can get. The hoy book test is impromptu (sort of) but requires a 'small' set up beforehand. I have an obsession for book/magazine and newspaper tests so I own most of the techniques. The best thing to do is to have a magazine with you. There are some great newspaper ones you can do impromptu where you get the headline they arrive at! There's other forces you can use but you need ten seconds alone with the book before hand!

Allegedly never seen before. I have awkward friends so I don;t mind anything that requires a glimpse. Val Andrews test is limited to one book and they know if I pull out a book there's something afoot.

I really like Colin McLeod's book test from his Opening Minds DVDs. Take a book and perform, totally impromptu, no setups and no forces. It's a really lovely method that I use all the time when someone asks if I can show them something.

The Hoy book test looks unbelievably fair, you only need to demonstrate what to do before hand and you're set...that easy. No breaks, crimps etc, just a big bit of bold.

Marc Paul's AAA book test is also very very good. Also bold as brass!

What Lenoir said. Multiple books (theirs) used. They have a choice.

Hoy has worked well for me. Even better is Marc Paul's AAA Book Test - there's a clip on his website which shows him performing it on Parkinson. Just be careful if you wear varifocals...

The Val Andrews UBT is good but it's not impromptu.

I've used a variation on it, it's a nice idea and tends to get good reactions.

I always loved the idea of it. I made up a gimmick. I'm going to give it a try.
