Opinions? Advice? Suggestions?

Postby Josh Clarke » Jan 17th, '13, 22:49

I have recently created a website to showcase my magic and to acquire more clients. I would like any and all input anyone has. Thank you!

The home page does not tell me what style of magic you are into (close-up, stage, etc), and nothing later on clarifies that. You need to focus more on what your potential clients are looking for, and give it to them from the start.

Should I just add "Josh Clarke • Close-up Magician" to the Home page? The first sentence of my bio states that I am a close-up magician.

You know often when people ask for advice on their website, they don't really like the answer, but...
your site says, and I quote "I am a magical, bass slapping werewolf." WTF?

Also, although the site does a fairly good job of showcasing what you do. It doesn't attract any clients.
I hate it when magicians tell us how they got into magic, it's just not something that bookers are interested in.
Clients just want to know what you'll do at their event not what magician would you take to dinner.

i have to second this.......

you don't express enough just how much of an impact you will be to your potential clients event, you need to sell yourself... that is afterall the purpose of the site.... some magicians overdo it, but you can also under-do it.

I can take the criticism. I'm looking for any input to better the site. Thanks for the advice. I've recently begun performing again, but the clients aren't so easy to come by like they were for me 4-5 years ago. I figured it was time for a website to promote my services. I also have some new business cards on the way. I'm asking for advice from others because it's easy for me to get wrapped up in what I want on the site as opposed to what needs to be on the site. Also, does anyone have any suggestions on how to get regular restaurant gigs? Here in America (and especially in my city) everyone goes out to a restaurant, orders as quickly as possible, eats as quickly as possible and leaves as quickly as possible. There's no time for magic.

Two cents....The only page I don't quite like is the bio page. It doesn't say much, "you entertain using coins, cards, something something and everything in between"' That doesn't tell a client anything.

List the company's or clients, (not private parties of course) that you have worked for. You have performed for, which organizations have you performed for (donated your time). Show people that you have done these things and not just say you have done these things.

You want a website so when you hand a business card out potential clients can get a little more information. The video of yourself doesn't do much, get a professional demo clip out there with audience reaction. give them a taste of what they are going to get. You walking down the center of a street doesn't say anything and after 30 seconds people are just going to click off.

You want a website that perhaps an agent would be happy to direct clients too. You want a website where marketing agents for large firms can get a good feel for what you do at first glance.

What I do like is the feel of the page hard to describe. I think you are on the right track I just think it is still a work in progress.

Really though I think a proper demo of you performing says more than anything. That is the beauty of a webpage. Otherwise it can all just be in print and you can hand over a brochure that says the same thing.

I'd say that you should have a separate page for details about booking. I see you have a number at the top, but that might be easy to overlook. If what you're really looking for is people to book you for events etc. I reckon a page detailing the kinds of things you do (the type of magic and events) would be a good idea. Also try to get your site search engine optimised so that when someone types something like 'magician for hire in [your area]' into google it will come up in the first few results.
