Back in late 2011 my good friend Mr. Darren Gooding put on a one man play in Colchester. Set around the world of Victorian stage illusionists it was a huge success. Now this play is returning to Colchester, Essex and the Headgate Theatre. To me the greatest thing about this play is it's set around Victorian Magic BUT it is in no way "The Prestige", something of a magic trick by itself. Below is the date and time of the show and a brief write up from the theatre. I must stress this is a one man play about magic, it is not a magic show. There are a few parlour tricks but this is not a stage magic show, just a beautiful amazing tale told by a phenomenally talented actor.
May Thursday 16th at 7.30pm
"THE CABINET OF LEOPOLD THORN"
Written and Performed by Darren Gooding
An extraordinary true story of ambition, loss, scandal and deception set within the obsessive, clandestine and occasionally downright ridiculous world of 19th Century Stage Illusion... Prepare yourself for an evening of sleights, misdirection and Steam-Punk Science in the beguiling, eccentric and enigmatic company of Leopold Thorn: Illusionist (professionally), Murderer (reputedly), Visionary Genius (quite possibly) and Strutting Dandy (unquestionably), as we attempt to answer the question of how a man who invented the greatest illusion ever known was so comprehensively erased from the history of stage magic...
WARNING – THIS PLAY MAY CONTAIN TRACES OF CARD TRICKS...
Tickets: £8, £6 (conc)
