Pocket Space for a Casual Performer

Postby FTHO » Mar 18th, '13, 00:03

Hello all,

As i am a casual performer - i don't work as a magician - I occasionally find myself wanting to perform something for someone i have met. I always have a deck of cards on me, and a pen and some blank card in my wallet. In other words i am always set to do something.
However i have learnt a lot of magic which requires additional props, which i rarely have with me, for example any tricks requiring an additional deck of cards, or a gimmick of any kind.

Most recently i have started performing Haiku by Vincent Hedan, which i absolutely love, and uses a small book of Haiku. I would like to be able to perform this more often. It has quickly become one of my favorites.

The problem is that it is a small book, which will probably fall apart quite quickly if i carry it in my pocket every single day (it is well made but a deck of cards gets ruined within a few months just by being kept in my pocket all the time).

So my question is what solutions are there for carrying extra props as a casual performer? I would like some way of being able to carry something like this with me all of the time.
I've considered those pouches that you attach to your belt, but I'm undecided, not sure if they are for me or how good they are.

I generally wear jeans and tshirt, with a jumper and long jacket in winter.

Any advice for me?

Thanks,

Sam

Could you, without breaching copyright, print your own haiku books? Then, when they wear out, you can just create another - either at home or via Lulu.com.

I would advise you to fashion a Wookie bandolier to hold your props, thereby ensuring you are not only ready to perform, but also drenched in awesome whenever you leave the house.

Ted: that's a good idea, however i am pretty sure it would be a breach of copyright, and i wouldn't want to do that.

as for the wookie bandolier - absolutely, I'm going to make one of those, i look a bit like a wookie anyway so it would suit me.

As a temporary solution (while i am making my bandolier) a friend suggested carrying it in a tin. I'd already considered carrying it in a mint tin, but my friend added that i could keep more than just haiku in there.
He suggested considering exactly what i would like to be able to perform and then creating a kind of tool kit to safely carry inside this tin.

This was a really good idea which has made me think about what would i like to carry with me but don't. What would i like to be able to perform...

The size of the tin should force me to be quite critical and hopefully only choose the effects i really enjoy

currently it is likely to be Haiku, my beer trick, blank card stock, a pencil and some boon writers,

I now need to find a tin small enough to fit in my pocket comfortably

A tobacco tin, you can get them at tobacconists, head shops, and Camden market for around £2.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

good plan, there are also a lot of flea markets and second hand shops selling things like that in Brighton, so i'll also try them.

Oh yeah, Brighton is hippy central, you should defiantly be able to find a 'tobacco' tin there.
