Magical Societies

Postby James Prince » Mar 30th, '13, 15:30

Hi
Someone who saw me perform at one of my restaurants and took a business card, has contacted me and asked for advice.

He wants to join a Magical Society and has worked out that Gloucestershire Magic club and Hereford Magical Society are the two closest - he now wonders which to go for.

He is just retired, has no knowledge to speak of, is interested in close-up only, not so interested in self working stuff.
Not my patch, so has anyone out there got advice for him?

Cheers
James Prince

Until someone with direct experience of those clubs comes along, I'd suggest the chap try each one, giving each sufficient time to get the full flavour of what they do and how they do it etc. Perhaps a minimum of 4 meetings or so at each?

The Gloucester club is actually the Cotswold Magical Society. (Some of the listings on various sites are well out of date) However, I belong to the CMS and can assure readers that it's a thriving club with lots of excellent meetings with lectures. Try looking at the new web site cotswoldmagic.com New members are always welcome and there is a god sprinkling of membership from true pros. to beginners. I have no knowledge of the other club so can't comment.

Hi Mark,

Do you know, off-hand, if the CMS still maintains video recordings of past Society competitions etc.?

I've tried contact them in the past, but have had no response. The archive I'm looking for would have been around ’84/'85 - Edgar Westlake's time!

Cheers!

Hi Rob,
I've had a look through the list of videos in the CMS library but can't see any videos relating to competitions of that period. There were dvds relating to competitions in the recent years although I don't think any have been placed in the library. Only held by some members. You might care to contact (say) Dougie Gibbard a long standing member of the CMS. Type his name into Google and you can find his website and contact details. He may have some knowldge or know someone else who might be able to help. Mark.
