Showoff with Cards

Postby El Enielator » Feb 24th, '05, 06:02

I would discourage people from buying showoff with cards or any other magic makers product. I had bought showoff with cards before I learned of Magic Makers Scams. They do not credit any of the orignators or ask them for permission.

To anyone not previously aware of this transaction the DVDs seem like a 10 out of 10. It is filled with material for a cheap price. They will soon find that many of the Flourishes are taught (I dont want to say wrong) poorly. They show how to do flourishes incorrectly ie; the hand positions they give are not the ones that are proven to work. You can usually find much easier ways to do the same flourishes.

All I will say is this is a 2 out of 10 and I am not going to list all of the flourishes taught, only because it will probably encourage people to buy the DVD. Just stay away from Magic Makers!

Thanks for that review.
I didn't realise the DVD was so bad.

I also avoid Magic Makers for the same reason.

I have the Magic Makers complete card magic dvd set and think it is great, and I've learnt hell of a lot from it, but the above quote worries me.

I was considering buying the show off with cards dvd as the trailer for it looks so enticing. I'm not a fan of rip offs but if the above is true, can someone out there recommend any other dvd material which is good for card flourishes and tricks.

thanks

Ade

Magic Makers are notorious for producing tricks which are blatant copies of other magicians' creations.
The originators never get a penny for their work.

As for DVD's you're looking for, there are many reviews on this site well worth checking out.

thanx for the link sax.

'kin hell, you can't get away from rip off's anywhere can you, amazing and very sad!

I've had music ripped off in the past so know how it feels when someone else is making money from your hard work it SUCKS big time! They change the title by a fraction and can get away with it.

I had no idea it was so prevalent within the magic community (but then that could just me being nieve as people these days will do anything to make a quick buck).

Needless to say I won't be buying any more magic makers products on principle.

It's also quite interesting, looking at the list, that how many of the copy products are for sale on ebay!!!!

Complete Card Magic

Postby The Last Deck on the Left » Mar 7th, '05, 13:43

Hi there,

I'm quite saddened to read this thread. I'm fairly new to Magic, (6 months serious - but a long interest since a kid).

I bought the Complete Card Magic set, which isn't cheap, and have been really pleased with it. My only critisism, is that is does look quite a low budget production.

I try and live an ethical life (where I can!) - you know, environmentally sound products, don't copy music or DVDs, and so on, so this is a bit annoying really.

Is it widely known in the magic world that Magic Makers are not ethically sound? Do most people avoid them (not just people here).

How about my Complete Card Magic DVD set - Does Gerry Griffen know the reputation of them I wonder? - I'm suprised he agreeed to the series.

Is this the same company that produce a time machine watch that I've heard lots of people saying is an unofficial copy?

Thanks,

Yes, Magic Makers are well known throughout the magical community.

Even companies who sell a lot of MM produce (like Penguin Magic) have come under fire for doing so.

To be honest, I think a lot of magicians are ethical, which is why there is so much flak about this issue.
At the end of the day, if creative artists aren't rewarded for their efforts then there's no point selling their creations. They might as well keep them to themselves.

And we're the one's who will suffer.

On the other hand, there are a few unethical creators out there as well. I know a couple of names (which I won't say online) who have sold tricks to distributors as exclusives, ontly to then sell the same trick to another distributor as exclusive. I 've heard of at least one big name who's done this on a few occasions and one of my magic dealers refuses to deal with him now, for this very reason. I have no reason to doubt what I've been told.

I've also noted this week, a trick that's being sold online, advertised on magic week as well, as a new trick, exclusive to the dealer who's selling it. I brouht this very trick from a dealer nearly a year ago who was selling it then as a new and exclusive. The dealer even went to the trouble of improving the routine for his customers, although it's the unimproved version that is being advertised.

The point is, it's the few who spoil it for the many and you'll unfortunately find these types in most, if not all walks of life. They're usually the ones who shout the loudest when someone someone does to them what they do unto others!
