Smoke effect

Postby Merlynof09 » May 15th, '13, 22:28

Hello, I'm looking for some advice as to which smoke device will work best for what I will need, I'm developing a new stage show and I want to be able to produce smoke from my hands several times, as it would be used to sugest the magic happening, how ever it should not interfere while it is not needed, any ideas, thoughts or input that you can give will be most helpful :D

Seeing as nobody else is jumping in to answer I will chime in.

Don't do it! Anything that involves smoke is a pain in the bottom no matter how you slice it. All the gimmicks are finicky, most use chemicals, Unless you are making your own dry ice (which isn't that difficult to do) then getting the stuff is a pain and keeping it is even more difficult.

That said are you looking for a thick smoke or whisps of smoke. Do you need the smoke to fill the stage or just a little bit in the hands so to speak? Are you looking for fire or just smoke or a combination of the two?

Again my advice is don't do it. But if you insist make sure you know exactly what you need then start hitting the magic shops. Yes all the gimmicks say they are easy, safe and create miracles, they all lie. But it can be done.

I use magic smoke v2. It's expensive but totally awesome and will do exactly as you describe, although people in the audience might not get a great view. It's great for metal bending routines, coin productions/vanishes etc and will add that extra bit of magic if used sparingly. There's a review here somewhere, I'd post the link but I'm in my phone and don't possess the necessary ability - being a Luddite!!

The line after the comma tends to tell the tale. "Although people in the audience might not get a great view." Then what exactly is the point? I am going to go out on a limb and say it is 'good' if you are performing really close up?

You're quite right - it's only good for close up!!
