Latto Dioti's Ultimate Levitation

Postby Michael Jay » Apr 1st, '05, 21:40

Before I start my review, to be very honest, I was sent this levitation device at a highly discounted price, under the condition that I do a review. The device came yesterday and I've been toying with it since.

What they say:

FROM THE MIND OF ITALIAN ILLUSIONIST LATTO DIOTI

The Ultimate Levitation

For the first time ever, a magician can levitate up to 1 foot from the ground, unsuspended by wires, and totally surrounded.
There are no cables, stands, magnets, threads, mirrors, glass or cover... the illusionist literally rises from the floor by a clear foot—a sold hoop can even be passed around his whole body!

Latto Dioti shares his secret here for the first time. Being born in a performing Italian circus family in 1966, Latto quickly became one of Italy's top acrobatic circus stars—and by the age of 17—he was making headway in magic performances too, known by the name of "Dioti—Illusionist".

Perhaps his most recognised illusion—still performed today by David Copperfeld—is the Ultimate Levitation illusion. Devised by Dioti in 1989, the Ultimate Levitation seemed like nothing more than a bog-standard stage illusion to the performer. Then, in the mid 1990s, a young street magician called David Blain took the world by storm with his own version of the Balducci levitation. Dioti saw this new-found 'surrounded' street magic performance as a rebirth for his Ultimate Levitation—and after 10 years of perfecting it—it's finally here.

It's clear from the first time you see the U.L. that it's not your usual levitation effect. In fact, it's impact is best summed up in this article by renowned illusionist Lance Burten:

"...The first time I saw it (the Ultimate Levitation) I almost wept. It is so pure, so clean. The grace with which [Dioti] rose from a standing position to an almost 'crucifixual' floating pose was reminiscent of a Michelangelo.
Obviously, it was a select audience, and we were then treated to a full explanation of how it was done. I actually walked around [Dioti] whilst he floated, and I had absolutely no idea that the method being used was in place.
For the first time since I was 5 years old—I believed in REAL magic again..."

Cost: £1,200

What I say:

This is a very glitchy device. However, given some time to set it up so that it fits your body (the proper sizing items are included), this is an arrestingly convincing levitation. As the blurb states, there are no cables, stands, magnets, threads, mirrors, glass or cover - this is magic in its purest form.

I have to admit, when I first received this gizmo, I was disappointed. After giving it a chance and showing it to family and friends though, this proved to be a BIG winner. I will not be surprised to see this item double in cost over the next few months, because anyone who is doing a formal show, in almost any venue, will be on the list to get one of these.

I think that this is going to be a big seller with the street magicians, who can do this fully surrounded and not be caught out. I know that I'm adding it to my street performances coming up this summer and there is no doubt in my mind that doing this levitation is going to be instrumental in picking up many jobs afterwards. This is an absolute must for all professional magicians. I believe that this will pay for itself after 10 to 12 performances.

Yes, it is pricey at 1,200 pounds, but the equipment that is used is of high quality and would cost you more than that if you put this together on your own. While you may feel that paying this amount is impossible, I'm going to give you good advice - borrow the money, get this levitation, you will never regret it.

Mike.

[edited in] The web site appears to be down - it won't pull up for me. Hopefully, they will have it up and running in the next few days.

Nice review. I saw someone levitating in the street, got about 12 inches in the air and were surrounded, does it sound like they were using this bit of kit?

Off hand, how long ago did you see this? It would have to be less than a month, since these aren't mainstream just yet and Dioti has just started selling them. The guy you saw would have to have some kind of inside track if he was using the device a month ago.
