Corinda's Haunted / Predicting tape-recorder

Postby Doc B » Apr 13th, '05, 21:46

Hi all,

Does anyone know if anyone is selling these (or some tech types who would build these)? I was thinking of making one myself but was worried that I don't have the tech know-how.

Basically, this effect is described in Corinda's 13 Steps and is under predictions (I think) - you get a bunch of people to write things on a board - choose some cards etc etc... then you flip in a casette and turn on the tape machine and the recorded voice (in a fun or scary way) lists off all its "previously recorder" predictions...

Anyone ever do this effect? I'm dying to try it out in the context of a bunch of "ghost" effects.

Thanks,

Doc B

Doc, I've had a few beers tonight but I can't seem to find reference to that one. Can you pinpoint where it is, I've failed to find it.

As a first thought, I would have said that it should be on CD or DVD nowadays !!

I'll look it up tonight and let you know... I'm thinking it might actually be under Billets now that I think of it... near the end of the chapter.

I think the trouble with using "modern" tech like a CD or MP3 player is it might actually tip off the method... which is basically tech. By using an old beat up tape recorder, I figure this would cause a bit more mis-attributions.. i.e. they didn't have X and Y back then.

My patter is going to be around buying a bunch of old items from an estate sale - with the previous owner having a colourful and scary history. I'm going to claim he taped his "visions" about 25 years ago and then play with with his own equipment. (I'll probably summon him as well for some other effects :))...!!!!

Last night there was a television programe on people who use machines to talk to the dead, and alow the dead to talk back.
It was very chilling.
You may want to do a little research into this . The " genuine" science behind it is verry telling.

Ah... it was in..the Book Tests!!!

OK - the effect is called "Ultra Modern Mentalism" and is near the end of the Book Tests and Interview with Fogel chapter in the 13 steps. I forgot it was a dressed up booktest because really, you can do almost anything with it.

Thanks for the idea of talking to the dead via electronic devices. That would add to the patter for sure!

Now - I'm still stuck - who the heck builds things like this?!!?

You know, Corinda had a ton of good things in his book - I'm surprised people haven't been making some of his equipment. Even the "de Profundis" effect (Where a predicition is in a clear crystal box wrapped in ribbon, suspended by a rope held by a spectator and the magician - and the spectator gets "mental vibrations" from the box)... I built it myself but someone must be making these things?!

(You can tell I'm a Corinda fan).

Ok, the 'Ultra Modern Mentalism' effect - starts on page 215, and contiues onto page, 216 and 217 (for those with Corinda at hand.)

It's a great idea.
It is given as a book test, but as has been said could be worked in many ways.
A tape recorder is mentioned, but with today's ultra modern technology something more suitable may be more appropriate.

As far as having them to talk to the dead, you should go see that film, where they record an empty room, and when they play it back they hear the dead talking - but can't remeber what it's called sorry.

I love Corinda's 13 Steps to Menatlism, and there are loads of gems, that I see, and then bookmark, and come back to and think about presenting them differnently.

I currently have about six bookmarks (playing cards) in different places.

I have worked some of the close-up bits and pieces and there is some great advice on the centre-tear.
Obviously some of the larger pieces are difficult to make, and i don't think any have been made copmmericially. It's just up to you to make them.

I myself am building "Corinda's Incredible Slate Test" which is gonna be big - it'll take a lot of work - i'll post up pictures, when it's done.

Hope this helps.
