ROOM 101 - Luke Jermay

http://www.alakazam.co.uk/acatalog/Hot_ ... html#a1540

Price: £14.99

Difficulty: 3/5

They say:

From the devious mind of Luke Jermay comes a refreshingly direct mental magic performance piece that leaves audiences stunned.

The performer places a blue-backed 'prediction' card into his pocket. A spectator fairly selects a card from a red deck and decides on ANY word to write across the face of the card. This card is placed face-up on the table. The performer removes his 'prediction' card and not only does the card match, SO DOES THE WORD, which is written in a different colour!

Instantly repeatable with a different card and a different word, and remember, it can be ANY WORD in ANY LANGUAGE!

No carbon, chemicals or other time-consuming preparation. In fact ROOM 101 resets instantly!

This is more of the same brilliant thinking which has earned Jermay his reputation as a truly original creator and performer. Includes everything needed to perform ROOM 101 straight away.

I say:
The lastest "long awaited for" effect from the prolific 'Alakazam'!

Cool...really cool. I have only just recieved this and I am a performance coward so I will review it's concept and quality....for now.

Luke Jermay usually releases written work for creating sophisticated mentalism effects that really mess with and use the minds of the spectators. I was really curious to see what an actual "trick" of his might be like. All I can say is cool!

This is a really clever mix of a surprising number of methods resulting in a seemingly single and impossible miracle.

You indeed get all you need for this effect. The "bits and pieces" are well "made" and presented. The instructions are beautiful and clear (a real trademark of Alakazam). There is a sense of confidence and excitment the moment you see the package!

Overall:
A devious, and exotic routine awaits you.

You will need to make a couple of bold moves, one of which is a sleight that often has people pooping themselves (a little). The trick is so clever and cool, I'm gonna make sure I master the needed move so I can perform 101 with confidence.

Room 101 is NOT a self worker but that isn't to say it is difficult. You will need nerve and confidence. Having said that Luke Jermay offers a couple of different handlings for those of us who don't quite have the bottle for one or two steps...bless him. (Thanks Luke!)

I would say this is not a beginners trick but you also won't have to have "knuckle-busting skills" either. It is an advanced trick/routine that has a big payoff for a moderate bit of skill, effort and some practice.

Rating: 9 /10 …just so long as you know some of the work is up to you...GREAT value for money!

I saw Luke do this at last years Kaymar lecture. It's nice to see has finally got it marketed.

Seing Luke perform effects like this is an inspiration for sure. It just goes to prove that the main skill in performing mentalism is the presentation, much more so than any other form of magic (IMHO)

I tried this for the first time last night on a fellow magician who generally can work out the method behind a lot of my tricks. He was impressed, very impressed, and despite my somewhat cack-handed handling of the 'not so bold version of the move', he came nowhere near guessing the method.

He went home thinking I'd somehow implanted the word written on his card (he chose the word 'ANT'), in his mind by subliminal suggestion techniques, Derren Brown style.

I've bought some spare packs of bikes in anticipation that I'm going to be needing quite a few replacement cards as this trick becomes one of my must do's.

A coupleof question

Postby The Last Deck on the Left » Jun 30th, '05, 12:32

Great review Tom,

I have a couple of quick questions.

Is your 'prediction' written in your own hand writing, or in that of the spec?

I've read a review elsewhere saying that the gaff won't last forever, and as yet there are no refills available - is this right?

Also, I've got quite thin fingers - another review said it would be very difficult to hide the relevant bits within your hand if your fingers are thin?

Looking forward to your reply! - My credit card is poised for action!!!

:D

Thanks

You can make your own refills. If its not something you allready know how to do, it's well worth learning.

You can do the effect with "thin fingers". Actually, it is the method I prefer.

Hi All

My review is mostly agreeable to Tom's, more a review on Alakazams service.

I ordered from Alakazam, the link at the bottom of the page at £14.99 I also ordered the Mindpower deck by JK @ £22
The next day, at 11am or so, I had a package at the door. It was indeed my order from Alakazam!!! Now thats magic!!
After opening room 101, I was guessing as to what to expect, and I wasn't disappointed. The book is well presented, and as Tom Lauten does say, there are other alternatives if you aren't comfortable with "THE MOVE"

As far as difficulty, If you do the first option with the move, I would say 3 out 5 stars for difficulty, maybe even 2.

Its about appearing confident, and if you do other mentalism effects, this will fit in well, provided you have a limited amount of card handling skill.
Put the performance on, and you have a killer effect.

Price 4 stars, you can make your own refills, its an easy concept, you'll see.

Quality 5 stars, great booklet, giving enough you need to know, and all cards are USPCC Bicycle, and you get a Sharpie too, incase you don't have one ;)

Service Outstanding delivery. Great service. Thanks :D

I personally am a little disappointed with this trick. Without giving too much away, one of the gimmicks you get needs a few alterations if you don't want to look really unnatural when writing. I I am amazed that this isn't done for you, and feel that a corner has been cut here. If you don't make the alterations, then the gimmick will be glaringly obvious.
It is also something i doubt i will ever get to try 'out in the real world' as it wouldn't work too well with my dress style very well.
Just thought i would give a different opinion to give this thread some balance, as i really don't think this effect is for everyone.

I agree with you on this....they should match totally, I did alter this myself, and wasn't so bad in the end.

It does depend on your style, and you wouldnt buy it if you didnt do any other mentalism really???

Hi guys,

Just wondering what is the best way to get hold of "refills" for this effect. Really this effect will only last a maximum of 15 performances, for a regular table hopper that is alot to get through.

This is a great effect by the way and love the concept, I have even thought of a few presentation ideas myself which i hope to put in place.

Any suggestions on the original comment would be kind

Chris
