Course suggestions anyone?

Postby gony » Apr 22nd, '05, 20:36

Hi,

I was hoping that someone could help me decide on types of courses to target to improve my magic performances.

My company want to send me on up to 5 days of soft skills training, for example Influencing People. I was kinda hoping to pick a course(s) that would not only help me at work but also with magic.

Any suggestions?

any courses that improve your relationships with people can only enhance your magic some examples are:-

sales tenique.
sales managment.
creative thinking.
aplied creative thinking in advertising.
resource managment.
creative writing.

hope this gets your grey cells churning.

NLP might be handy if you read up on the background psychology beforehand, otherwise any courses in stage presence or public speaking would be useful for performances.

Cogito, ergo sum.
Cogito sumere potum alterum.

Hi Gony, firstly, it's a metter of what job you do for your company and if you can find a suitable course that fits both your work and your magic.

Your employer is unlikely to send you on an advertising related course if you work in an engineering environment or on an engineering course if you work in finance. To be frank, if you asked then they would probably think that you're taking the p*ss.

I agree with magicdiscoman in that anything that is people related would be a good start but perhaps a 'train the trainier' type course would also be ideal as they teach you lots of presentation skills, how to construct a presentation and also how to time and plan a presentation. These 'train the trainer' courses are relevant to a very wide selection of industries and job functions and your employer get the benefit of you being able to train other employees whilst you get more and more experience of dealing with all sorts of people which will help your magic.

If you pass the course you also get part of a nationally recognised teaching qualification.

Before deciding on what to apply for, I would ask what's on offer to see if there are any expectations or restrictions that your employer has and I would also ask to see a course sylabus for the courses that you are interested in, before you make your final selection.

Personally, I would avoid any sales course in favour of the above (having done both).

Forgot to say something which may be of interest to a wider audience, I think that you can also get access to these courses through local colleges.

Your employers can also quite often get part funding for these courses through the open college networks or National Training Organisations (NTO's) which most industry's have.

You would probably be able to get assistance in placing and funding if you are unemployed and I also understand that you can get free placement as part of resettlement training if you are coming out of the armed forces.

Recommend speaking to job centres, colleges and career advisors.

Many thanks for the rapid replies.

I will look into it and let you know what I get booked on - presentation skills looks a likely candidate.
