I agree - if you can afford them - Michael Ammar's Easy To Master Card Miracles are excellent - if I were going to have one set, this would be them.
I would argue that the Daryl's Encyclopedia is an excellent reference tool, once you are initiated in Card Magic, and want to work on acquiring some more sleights.
Oz Pearlman's Born to Perform is probably the best single dvd to buy, if you don't want to spend a lot of money, but want to learn some kicker tricks to impress your mates, and see if you really want to go down the long (and possibly expensive) road of magic - BEWARE for CUPS - Compulsive Unnecessary Purchase Syndrome - I suffer badly from it.
I actually started my route into magic via the ellusionist ninja series - these are arguably a bit more pricey than Born to Perform, and are slated by a lot of members for not giving enough credit to the inventors/downright stealing other people's ideas. They are however well presented, and I found Brad Christian's teaching style to my liking.
That's that's a summary of the best titles in my collection for your situation.
