Red Hot Mama

Postby MagicBill » May 12th, '05, 11:59

I've been doing a Red Hot Mama routine as an opener whilst table-hopping.
If using a red deck, I replace the blue card with a red card and write the words ‘Your Card!’ on the back. I find the routine flows better and the patter is more logical from the spectator’s point of view as you are trying to find their card. More room for gags with this version too!

Has anyone else given this classic a fresh twist? 8)

If you want different ideas about this great trick, study Whit Haydn’s terrific manuscript “The Chicago Surprise.” You’ll learn much more than just a card trick from Whit’s thoughts. It is available on the School for Scoundrels’ web site.

Gerald

My favorite version of this effect, and the only variation I've used since, is Sankey's handling, called "Not This Card".

It's similar to your effect, Bill. What I LOVE about this handling, is that you don't need to be crafty about the work. You openly bring their attention to the odd-backed card before the effect begins. The idea of the effect is that you show them a card that SAYS "Do Not Choose This Card" right on the back. Try as they may, no matter what they do, they choose the card.

It plays out exactly like Red Hot Mama, but I find this variation works nicely for me. If you want to check it out, it's on the Front Row Sankey DVD.

I might have to try out those variations they sound quite humorous. Having said that the handling from ETMCM 1 is the one I use now and it's definitely in my top three effects for spectator reaction, plus it's so easy. As my friend's girlfriend said to him the other day 'It's the first trick you learned and the best trick you know'.

The artist who does not rise, descends.
