B**k P**ming Advice

Postby zerooffline » May 20th, '05, 08:45

I've been learning and practicing b**k p**ming with multiple cards and I can't seem to figure out how to retreive one card at a time after I have several b**k-p**med. I was hoping someone could offer me some advice, a video, a written tutorial, or anything that might help.

I don't really know the rules for this forum (as I just signed up), but if this isn't the place to be asking this, I apologize.

Edit: Added astericks to the sleight... is this something that is generally done in this forum?

Actually, if there is advice to be given I wouldn't mind some either :D. I learned to release the card from b**k p**m by releasing one corner with the pinkie and then curling in the first and second fingers to retrieve it - i.e. retrieving one entails releasing them all...

Thanks!

Kati

Try getting Art Of Card Manipulation (1-3) by Jeff McBride. Great DVD and teacher and will teach you many methods.

I didn't realize there were multiple methods for this. I was hoping I wouldn't have to buy more stuff... but perhaps I'll search for the DVDs and see what the price is.

I have 2 books I bought a long time ago, something like Expert Card Technique and The Royal Road to Card Magic... perhaps these books will have answers (I didn't finish reading them yet).

What is the best place to buy these types of DVDs? Magic shop? Amazon.com? etc..

I personally use Penguin Magic but you will have to decide whether you want to or not as some magicians have issues with this shop (it has been known to sell copied tricks, especially by Magic Makers).

For DVDs that it doesn't have, you could try Bargain Magic, MagicTricks.co.uk, or Google.

Magic shop? Amazon.com?

Magic Shop.

Amazon sell some of the basic stuff but if you want any real detail the products are specialist items and only usually available through dedicated magic dealers.

Hey guys, I didn't want to post an entirely new thread so I decided to revive this one...

I just got Jeff McBride's 3 volume DVD set. The knowledge in the dvds definitely helped with what I was trying to learn; but now I have some new questions that maybe some of you can help with.

1) Are there are good (commonly found) alternatives to fanning powder?

2) What is the best pack of cards (again, commonly found) to use for productions?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Right now I'm practicing with an out-of-the-box pack of bicycle cards, and I think with the help of fanning powder and a good deck of cards I might be able to seriously step up my game.

i've heard rumours that fanning powder is odourless talcum powder, please dont take my word for that as i've never bought any of the stuff myself. and if that is wrong please please somone correct me as i'd like to find out myself :P

I'd say the best commonly found cards would be the bikes. I'm guessing you've watched the section on the Jeff McBride DVD's about card preparation , does that not make them work any better?

Other than bikes i could suggest Manipulation cards. They're a bit more expensive than normal cards, 1/3 thinner and with pink backs to blend in with your hand. McBride says you can backpalm a full deck right out of the box.

Edit: Url didnt work , it was just a link to http://www.cards4magic.co.uk/acatalog/Cards.html then i searched for "manipulation"

The alternatives to fanning powder include wax, which is used a lot by Japanese manipulators. It can be bought specially from magic shops or normal candle wax can be used. It is just rubbed onto the individual cards. Whilst I prefer fanning powder, I know several people who prefer the feel of wax for manipulations and fanning.

The best cards to use for manipulation are specific manipulation cards. Whilst bikes can be good, they have to be broken in, whereas Lance Burton manip cards and Norm Nielsen manip cards are ready to use and are much thinner, thus meaning you can hold more at the same time.

There are some good manipulation card out there.

As Kati said, Jeff uses Bee cards, they are very easy to come by, and they are the no edge ones, not the security edge found in casinos (they fade out to white at the edges.)

Also buy red, when the hand is in motion, the cards can be sticking out, and blend in with the colur of your hand (unless you are green  )

Jeff shows you how to prepare the cards too, with fanning powder, and with a wooden ruler and a card clamp. I prefer preparing the cards myself rather than buying manipulation cards, as it saves money, and last ages.

Fanning powder is not odourless talcum powder, try talcum powder and see what happens. Fanning powder contains zinc, and it absorbs the moisture in the cards a lot better than talc, and the fine particles left stick to the cards making them moves against each other easier (like egyptians rolling blocks on logs  if you get my drift :? ) The best way is to do it with a bag, but in the hand with a Faro shuffle if you need a quick fix.

Art of card manipulation is a fantastic series, but needs dedicated practise to pull most of them off.

I watched the dvds again and this time I caught what Jeff says about the fanning powder. It is called Zinc Stearate. This is a quote I found about talcum powder:

Talcum powder is usually made up of various combinations of zinc stearate, magnesium silicates, as well as other silicates which are finely ground.

So I guess I could try it and see how it works... or perhaps try the wax idea. I have already prepared the cards with the ruler, but I don't have a card clamp.

Maybe I should just buy the manipulation cards and save myself some time. I barely have time to practice these tricks as it is.

Thanks for all the replies, I appreciate it.
