The History of Magic on the Radio

Postby Jing » Jul 8th, '14, 13:05

I'm presenting a show on the radio on Friday, and thought in between the music, if might be a good idea to give a bit of background of magic on the radio.
Does anyone have any knowledge of this? or could point me in the right direction?
Who was the first magician to perform on the radio?
Who was the most popular / longest running, etc?

Also, did Theo Annemann do a radio series?

Thank you for your knowledge,
and feel free to listen in at 8pm via staffordfm.co.uk

I think Dunninger did a lot of radio in the 1940s, don't know about Annemann though.

Edgar Burgen was the first vent to perform ventriloquism on the radio. Okay not magic but I decided to throw it out there because...just because.

I remember Paul Daniels doing a card trick on the radio - listeners had to have a deck in front of them and follow his instructions so it was obviously a self-worker of some kind. Then, of course, there was dear old Uri Gellar who fixed broken watches etc 'viz ze power of hissss minddd' over the radio and TV on various shows  .

... and then there were The Piddingtons ...

Speaking of ventriloquism, the most famous dummy in the UK in the 50s was Archie Andrews, who had his own radio show (later on TV too) plus comics and so on.

Archie was OK on the radio and the show gave many well known performers their first break in showbiz. Sadly, once the show went on TV (with a revamped Archie doll) it was very obvious that his 'handler' Peter Brough was a terrible vent, his lips moved with almost every word!
