Pork pies at my Bar Mitzvah? We had them everywhere :P.

OK, not quite.

OK, not at all.

I've always opined (see...new word :)) that having a Black Tiger gaff deck is a bit...what's the word...pointless? I mean, the point of having a Black Tiger deck is that they are different from other cards and attract attention - so why have gaff ones? You want gaff ones not to stand out!

Well, gaffs have their own place, but I would only use a gaff trick once the audience has examined the deck (just palm the cards in) and I have shown several effects already. The idea is that the spectators be sure that you are not using 'funny' cards. Hence, using a Black Tiger which is almost by definition 'funny' seems to me a bit odd.

However, I think that using gaffs can result in that extra cleanliness or impossibility that is not feasible with sleights (eg DF card or LePaul Center Reverse?).

This is going to spark a debate, isn't it .

nar no debate.why work so bloomin hard when a gaf does all the hard work 4 you,Also some of the gaffs are required for certain tricks, but above all they are there to make the garr maker money and thats working at over £20 per set

I won't debate you - but my problem is the sheer amount of people saying the Black Tigers look like a gaff deck and are immediately suspected by the spectators.

I hate to break it to you, folks - that's the case no matter the deck. As SOON as you approach someone and offer to show them something with a deck of cards - they are IMMEDIATELY going to think you're using some kind of trick.

Gaff cards serve a place in magic, just as sleights do. I can walk up to someone with an UNO deck and they'd think I was using trick cards. Gimmicks help out, and while I agree you shouldn't rely on them, remember this:

If you're not using a gimmick - YOU are the gimmick.

Postby magic4you2c » Jun 1st, '05, 08:42

as i said i personaly hate them.hey but i like knife thru arm and most hate that.lol but seriously if your showing tricks with cards use a normal looking deck, and if your just a poser (i say that cos i cant do it lol) then by all means use tigers.or vipers (just as good if not better).anyway thats that tidied up.i dont like them i dont use them but i dont do fancy flourishes.

A lot of these gaffs would be great if only they were made in regular bicycle stock!
