Speed and Pace of Tricks

Postby stevebo » Jun 2nd, '05, 14:23

I was wondering how fast you guys perform your tricks. As for me, I tend to perform tricks too fast. I find this a problem. I have recorded myself performing a trick and I seem to be performing a trick too fast to even understand what is going on, such as card vanishes and production.

Do you have this problem of doing stuff too fast?

Yes I too have problems with preforming tricks to fast.

I try to work in short pauses or slow up on key parts so the audeince can tell what is going on.

This might work for you.

Mmm... an interesting question which I am sure will bring a variety of answers.

Firstly, I'd say that much will depend on the trick and the effect that you are trying to create.

There's little point in performing at lightening speed knowing that your audience will not be able to keep up with what's happening, but you don;t want to be so slow that you then reveal the secret ( as well as boring them).

Nope I can take ages to do a trick, I've been known to spend 30 mins at a table and do around 4 tricks.

I create my own stories to the effects I do. Sometimes I can spend 10 minutes telling a story for a 30 second trick. That's down to performing 8)

Stevebo - how about telling us which effects it is that you feel you are performing too fast? We can give you more specific help then. :)

I would say my main problem is card vanishes. And also, my general handling of cards is too speedy such as squaring up the deck!

If you know your doing it too fast, what's stopping you from doing it slower?

Because when I perform slower, I'm really aware of it and I feel as though I'm performing too slowly! I think this is probably just my problem though.

Why not ask for some feedback from your audience?

That's actually a really good idea! I only wish a had a magic partner who I can practice with... It's hard to find someone with the same interest in magic as me. :(

Can you video yourself doing it and then watch for yourself?

However if you KNOW it is too fast, then while it may feel too slow there is very little chance it will be. Only way to find out is to try it.
