Stand Up Monte

The Effect
No matter how hard the spectator tries to follow the Ace - the money card - they just cannot keep track of it. In a series of magical moves, the Ace jumps from hand to pocket to hand, finally disappearing altogether to reveal three loser cards. The climax shows the three loser cards have changed into three Aces!

Cost
£7.25/€10.91/$12.95 (free p&p)
Available from Penguin Magic.
Your first order from Penguin Magic will result in a 10% discount on all future purchases. This gives excellent value for money on Penguin's already keen prices.

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

3
Only one sleight is used, but this is not advanced and should certainly be within the capabilities of your average "amateur hobbyist". Even those "eager newbies" amongst us should be able to perfect this sleight with some practice.

Review
Stand Up Monte uses normal and gaffed cards to great effect, combining a nice (but long) routine with fairly simple handling.

One simple sleight is needed and this is explained in the instructions for the inexperienced or beginning magician. The printed instructions are good and include a few illustrations to aid learning; it also features two "position checks" to ensure the cards you hold are in the correct set up at key points in the handling, which is a nice touch and certainly helps in this long and fairly complex routine. Fortunately, Penguin Magic offer demonstration videos and I would highly recommend you view the demo for Stand Up Monte, as this will greatly facilitate the learning process.

The advertising blurb on the packet states that Stand Up Monte is "...a fabulous strolling trick that requires no table and packs a lot of magic and fun into a really great routine". I couldn't agree more. It can be performed impromptu and because a table is not required, the magic happens in the spectator's hands, which is always guaranteed to elicit incredulous responses. Due to the use of gaffed cards, Stand Up Monte will not withstand examination, but as usual in packet tricks of this nature, a simple switch would solve this.

Overall
Stand Up Monte is a great trick, but is by no means self-working. Those of you looking for a simple, basic trick that you can perform within minutes of opening the packet, are advised to look elsewhere. You must be prepared to put in a fair amount of practice in order to memorise the long routine so it can be performed without pause. All the required cards are supplied printed on red Bicycle stock and packaged in a small envelope. Highly recommended.

It looks like the image links to the website I used to host it. I wasn't aware of it - they must do that as a matter of course. Sorry for the confusion.

I don't have this routine, but I watched the demo video and...meh. I mean, it looks OK but it gets confusing and it was immediately obvious to me within a few seconds how the trick was done. Nice handling, but too confusing for me.

Try Color Monte!

You're right, Stand Up Monte can seem confusing at first and is certainly not for everyone, as I mentioned in my review. I also figured out how it was done on first viewing of the demo, but I still purchased it because I like the routine I am not inclined to produce "home-made" tricks. The secret may be obvious to magicians, but believe me when I say that it is not obvious to spectators. I have performed SUM on a number of occasions for lay audiences and have never been challenged; I believe that given sufficient practice, SUM will serve you well. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

By the way, Color Monte is another favourite of mine and is one of the few packet tricks I carry everywhere with me.

Agreed. I think this trick is a little too obvious.

Also, I thought that 10% discount on all orders was a privileged penguins only thing. I didn't know it was for all new penguins.

Hi there!

I will PM you but could you clarify how to get this 10% discount as I do not quite see? I don't have any discount numbers or anything like that, and I've made 5 orders...

Hi Kati,
You don't get anything I think for the first order. But when I received my order they sent a code which I could enter to get 10% off my second order. That arived today (magic rattle box, not sure about it yet, will do a review). anyhow this new paperwork offers me another 10% discount off next order as a "valued repeat customer"!
Hope that clarifies it.

If anyone is interested in doing the monte without gaffed cards then i Suggest getting Daryls DVD on the Subject. I found this to be a really good source of information on the subject and a great asset to my collection.
I personally use Micheal Skinner 3 card Monte packet trick but i also keep 3 normal cards in my pocket as well so when i put it away and a smart *rse comes out with the old "your using trick cards", I can say "look i'll show you one more time" and let him see that the cards aren't gaffed this is good if a crowd has been watching cos now you can go one on one the the smart B@~+ard and really get a response.
