The Artful Mr Walton

Postby mm_112358 » Jun 12th, '05, 23:21

Hi Folks,

I had a great few hours (roughly) on (SAT11th) at my local magic shop, usually this guy is pretty busy but seeing i had arrived early morning, i was lucky enough to have the good fortune of spending about an hour being mesmorised ALL BY MYSELF with a said Mr Roy Walton, first off im only about 5-6 months old magic wise ( cards mainly ), and for the record i would like to state this fine chap is a gent and a scholar!, after maybe about half an hour discussing some tricks/magicians etc (had a great chat about a certain Mr D Vernon), the both of us scoured his entire stock (and i mean the lot) for a few books/DVD's that might contain a few effects i was after, alas to no avail ( but now on order, but 1!), anyway as i said after about hour of chatting, reading, listening and then scouring, thee aformentioned Mr Walton proceeded with a few spectacular effects which left me utterly perplexed - he explained that the tricks he showed me were from a said Mr Vernons books anyway just wanted to share my fantastic day and Big up my Man Mr Roy Walton ( i also bought a trilogy of Mr Vernons books plus a little devious number titled Counts Cuts Moves and Subeuteo :) sorry Subtlety - i thank Mog for that i think - im sure i read one of his posts that mentioned it. Anyway thanks and sorry about the length of the post.

Nice one MM. It's reason's like that that I feel it is a shame that there seem to be fewer and fewer bricks and mortar magic shops about these days.*

You are indeed very lucky to have Mr. Roy Walton resident in the Tam Shephard shop. To have him show you card tricks personally must have been awesome. Also great choices in the books you picked up. Counts, Cuts , Moves and Subtleties is going to prove to be invaluable to you, and there is some amazing material in the Dai Vernon trilogy.

You may want to also check out Roy Waltons own books next time you are there.

Thanks for posting your experience.

* I know I keep on about it, but check my signature for a list of all the magic shops in the country that can be visited. If you know of any I have missed, then please contact me...

I too have been lucky enough to catch Mr Walton at a quiet moment, and for a beginner like me it was inspirational. After talking for a while about the pros and cons of me being left handed, he did a couple of things, including the Hermann(sp?) Pass. It was one of those 'must go home immediately and practice' moments.
Glasgow magicians are very lucky to have such a skilled gentleman and such a great shop. There's also a young lady who works there, who has been very helpful in Mr Walton's absence- especially when she recommended the Patrick Page spongeball DvD last week. My sponge ball stuff has come along in leaps and bounds since then. Once again, great shop!

Cheers Troops,

I too have found this woman very very helpful in Roy's absence ( something tells me she may be a relation of his, as ive read its a really old family run business - i may be wrong), and bananafish your spot on there Cuts, Counts will help me alot as i failed to mention i also purchased "The Complete Walton Vol 1" about 6 months ago, but i couldnt understand a fair number of the moves involved ( Cuts Counts :P comes in very handy here ). As to the Dai Vernon book i skimmed through it late last night - it has many a fine gem - im a complete addict now - next on the list is a DVD set - was going to get Dai's very own set ( cant mind the name of it old vid shot in 1982 though, i know that much ) - can you recommend any DVD sets im not too fussed if its over 8-10 or so volumes ill just buy one at a time:)

Cheers

If you're looking for a big DVD set, I've always heard great things about Ammar's Easy to Master Card Miracle series...

Hi,
I have have also had the pleasure of one-on-one with Roy.
Very humble person and very helpful.
When I first started to visit his shop, he would steer me away from some of the good trick saying "they are conjurers effects, why don't you try this over here". I took this to be that he was not so interested in making money of out overyone that came into his shop but was carefull about gaurding the secrets/art. Now he knows I am serious about magic he will gladly sell me anything I want :D

I also remember when I went through a phase of buying packet tricks and struggled with some moves, he would help out by working out a different handling that was easier and that was without him reading the instructions.

I believe the young helpfull ladies are his daughters.

Every time I go in, I just ask "Do you have any (type of magic) you can show me??"

Then he shows me all of the good one's that he has, and I love it!!! Roy Walton was the first person I ever saw do the pass. He said buy this book, The Royal Road to Card Magic, and he showed me a couple of things that I would learn. Not how to do them, but just showed me them. I was amazed!!!

I visit Tam Shephards every week & get to spend several hours talking with Roy Walton & I always learn something new from him as the man is a genius, many a time Roy has left me in  with a card effect but he nearly always tips his mitt & gives me the secret. My aim in magic is to fool Roy with a card trick. The 2 helpful women are Julia & Sarah(Roy's daughters)

Coo, someone with a Walton number of 1 (like Erdős numbers) :)

I don't suppose you'd mind popping along to the introductions area and doing the neccesary, would you? It's a sort of tradition that you tell us who and what you are, experience, that sort of thing, you see.

Very few people realise that Tam Shepherd's is a branch of Davenports. Roy must have been there at least 30 years or so.

Actually I remember frequenting the shop 45 years ago. I think back then it was nothing to do with Davenports though. Of course I may be wrong.

It is good to see a magic shop in existence for such a long time.

Roy has been in Tam Shephards since the late 60s when he & his wife Jean(daughter of George Davenport) bought the shop,if anyone has any questions about Roy or any of his tricks(only names of them no secrets) please ask.

Being new to magic I often feel a bit intimidated by the dudes hanging out at the back of the counter of the shop, but I was in Tam Shepard's to buy some cards or something and he came over and said hello. He asked if I'd just moved into Glasgow as he'd not seen me before. When I told him that that was because I've not been doing magic long but that I had bought the Rainbow Cascade recently, he just started showing me the right way to do the Elmsely Count when there was really no need for him to take time out to do so.

I was really impressed with the kindness and approachability (that can't be a real word) he showed towards me.

The other members of the shop are great too. Its a great shop to visit - much more fun than buying stuff online.

I can't tell you how envious I am of all you guys who have had the ultimate pleasure of a one to one session with the great man. It was jerry Sadowitz who put me on to Roys work many years ago, truly a master. I would recommend his books, but they are definitely not for the beginner.
