If you need to justify or explain old and out of use items, would it be possible to refer to a recent Treasure Trove discovery of old coins? Originally buried by The Mob just outside Vegas - along with a few of their rivals? You could then lighten things if required by pretending to wipe a bit of one of those rivals off one of the coins. Or perhaps a more sinister line about a weird cult stashing the cash but bestowing strange properties on the coins first? (Having read all that I think I need to seek professional help!)

um.........have you taken your medication today? jk

I'm sure I could utilize some patter for whatever I choose.... I stopped in a coin shop yesterday to see the Barber half dollars.... they look interesting... sadly there is no rim left on most which makes it difficult to palm :(

I need to see the walking liberty's and the ben franklins first before I make a decision.

For whatever reason I guess I just hate using the old standard 64 kennedy's.

Also, I've been told that there are other coins (Australian and such) that are the same size as half dollars..... so I need to look at those as well.... perhaps I'll use them instead of English pennies.... it would be nice to work with different coins than every other american magician.

Yup - it's produced by an American specialist in these matters. By the name of Jack Daniels. Nice guy. 8)

ahhh.... if that works for you...

I on the other hand much prefer Mr. Walker's products.... in fact, we're on a first name basis by now... I just call him John.

A couple of points to add:
!) I picked up 20 old english pennies for £0.50 on eBay, from the Coins/bulk section.
2) I have some Japanese Y500 coins - they are just about the same size as half dollars and the milling is much more pronounced.
3) One advantage of US half dollars is the shine. Although I tended to think of all silver looking much the same, a simple comparison of a half dollar with, say a UK £1 coin, will soon show you how much better the half dollar is at catching the light.

Just to complicate matters ...
I just dug out some pre-Euro 5DM silver coins from a previous life in Germany. About 1mm smaller than old english pennies. I'm playing with it as I write! Don't know how common they are, probably same argument about "unusualness" (sorry can't think of the proper word it's getting late). But if you like variety ..
