Hi everyone, since being a kid i have loved magic, especially card magic, although i have never tried to perform any. However, after watching Derren Browns Devils picturebook my enjoyment of cards has been rekindled and i wish to try and start to learn some tricks and thats how ive stumbled across this site.

Currently im just collecting a mass of info, ive already got The Royal Road to Card Magic and Oz Pearlman's Born To Perform card Magic on order and they should arrive soon. But ive got to get myself some new cards, does anyone have any recomendations as to what cards are the best? or does it not really matter?

Any advice anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hi and welcome! Almost any reasonable deck of cards will be fine but the main brands used in most magic effects are Poker size Bicycle Brand, Tally Ho, and other cards made by the US Playing Card Co. You can get special decks and equally special cards in the same designs to mix in with regular cards if required. Check out any of the online magic suppliers, especially cards4magic.co.uk ( www.cards4magic.co.uk ) to see what's on offer.

Other brands are used, some from Europe, some from South Africa but it's really down to what you feel happy with. Just to confuse things, Paul Daniels always seems to use standard Waddington's cards when I've seen him perform! If you check through the Review sections and/or use the Search function you'll find a lot of previous postings on the topic of which cards - so make a flask of coffee, a large bag of sandwiches, take the phone off the hook and browse away!

Hi Vortex and welcome - you'll be in a right spin when your book and DVD arrive - good selection!

I watched rcarlsens Invisible palm and I've started to think that maybe I should try out card magic to..but I'm not sure if I should start with it at the same time as I'm trying to learn coinmagic (I do have a few cointricks that I can but I feel that I can become alot better at them spedning some more time on training..) i thought it would be unnecesary to start another thread for my little question...what do you people think about it? Should I train only on coin until I feel I master it more..or should I try to learn cardtricks at the same time?

Argh what a nightmare! My new decks have arrived but im still waiting for my book and DVD to turn up. Until they do i cant start practicing

Also, would any of you recomend getting a mat to use, like that in rcarlsens videos? And rcarlsen, your videos are great, ive watched everyone of them and enjoyed them.

Welcome to TM Vortex. a close up mat is a good thing to have but not a necessity straight away. I have a mat and don't really use it opting for a folded up table cloth most of the time when practising (could be I'm too lazy to fetch it out the other room though :? ).
