What trick next?

Postby anti_camper » Jun 17th, '05, 12:59

Hey guys. First let me start off by saying that this forum has really helped me in the past couple of days. Im not sure why exactly, as I haven't been given any direct advice on how to do a trick, but I guess it has made me feel a bit more comfortable with the fact that I am with a group of people who share the same passion I do, and are willing to give their support. *cries*

OK, rant aside, I have a little dillema. I have learnt quite a few tricks (I believe), and they are: King Rising Levitation, Balducci Levitation, Ambitious Card Variation, Matrix Trick, The Throw Vanish, and the Revolution Coin Vanish. My favourite line of magic is Vanishing, but I also love Card Tricks and Levitation (although I think the rest of the levitations require gimmicks such as a certain type of thread *wink wink* and other unnamed gimmicks.) I am looking for another trick to learn, preferrably along the lines of Vanishing, but that isn't really a pre-requisite. Judging by the tricks that I have outlined to you, what would you recommend I learn. Names of tricks and Links would be helpful too  . Thanks very much!

If you like card tricks then there are more than enough stunning ones to keep you occupied. It all depends if you want gimmicked or un-gimmicked ones.

Personally I love twisting the Aces, NFW, the ambitious card, Jazz Aces, oil and water.. basically quick routines that I can get out of my pocket and just do without the need to carry round a full deck (although I'm now progressing to using more and more cards to do colour changing decks, Out of this world, predictions etc.. etc..).

I have also just bought the first three of Ammar's Easy Card Miracles which I think has some stunning effects on them. They are not cheap (but not over expensive for what you get) and out of the 10 or so tricks on each one I think I'll probably use about 6-7, which is not bad. Some are easy.. others require a little more skill (not much but some) and practice.

I'm sure many others will offer you more tricks that they love etc.. as there are more tricks around than you could ever perform in your lifetime. The trick (if you'll excuse the pun) seems to be getting ones that suit you and the way you perform and many of the individually sold ones (usually gaffed I admit) have sample videos you can download and watch.

There is also a great review section here of course which I have found invaluable.

Slippery.

Have you really learned these tricks? I mean, can you embed them in a routine and present it to laymen and entertain them?

If you can do this, then I would recommend that you improve what you have and try to vary things to make a still better impression. If you cannot do this, then you should stop buying more stuff and start doing the former.

You have enough material for a great routine now. Use it and get more performance experience. You do not need more gimmicks, effects or ideas.

Now the magic dealers on this forum will probably behead and ban me for writing this ... so if this was my last post, you know what happened to me

Fortunately there are no magic dealers in positions of authority or it could get messy since I agree entirely!

I can back up rumburak on this. I used to purchase magic tricks non-stop and I still regret it. I've wasted so much money. I like to stick to one trick now and work on it till I master it! I tend to stick to card magic now. I buy DVDs and books to teach me impromtu and non-gimmicked versions of card tricks.

Vanishing tricks are very angle sensitive usually. It takes a lot of work to get it down without thinking and so that it is effortless.

Hey, thanks guys, very much. Personally, I believe I can perform these tricks well, I have fooled many friends and teachers at school (my year level co-ordinator went crazy when I did the throw vanish  ) and I have also performed for my family and a few other strangers without flaw. This being said, I think I will still take your advice about practicing some more until it is flawless, because I sure don't want to be caught out in the middle of a routine. Thanks very much, I'll post in here again when I'm sure I need another trick. And I really, really dislike gimmicks, in reply to what rumburak said, I think I didn't explain myself clearly enough, I really, really dislike gimmicks.
