Learning magic

Working on your magic - how do you do it?

Ok well I normally learn my magic – as it is mentalism – by reading books (or remembering effects I have been taught). I underline tricks which sound appealing to me, read them a few times, and then type them up on my laptop in step by step form. Then print them out and put them into a folder which I can then turn too later for study and practise. After that I practise and work out some patter and presentation. It seems to work but it takes a long time etc

I was wondering how you all practise and learn effects. Do you read them and then re-write them? Do you just fold the page and work from there? How do you learn?

I learn an trick or effect first until I've got it spot on. This usually involves trying it out on a few good friends and family who I then ask to rate it. Once I've got to where I'm looking to be, I then try to look at different presentation methods, changing the patter and generally personalising the trick or effect.

I also look at other tricks to see if it will fit into a routine, rather then just judging it own it's own. Trying to find out what sort of tricks it will compliment or not, as the case can be.

I also look at general things that people react to, not necessarily magic and then try to see if I can recreate that reaction in some shape or form through a trick or by using a particular effect.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!
