Magic Tricks & Copyright

Postby Garry Platt » Jun 29th, '05, 21:09

Having acquired several books and DVD’s on Magic I notice that a number of tricks appear in many publications. The questions I have is; for an author putting together a compendium of tricks what conjure or illusion is copyright? What can be written up and published and used again and what can't?

Garry,

If you take a look around the forum you will find some discussions regarding this.

An Apology, bloody as it was has much regarding ownership, copyright and intellectual rights. This is in 'Forum Requests'.

Rip-offs (AKA Knock Offs) in miscellaneous has a great article which might be useful (thank you again Kati!).

There are other which touch on this topic too if you have a go with the search function, you'll probably be able to hasten your searching for answers.

I hope this helps, feel free to pm me if there's anything else I can help with,

Vic

Just a point that is perhaps worth noting, although it probably won't effect most here.

The point is that I've noticed that although tricks taught on DVD's permit you perform these tricks as shown, many exclude performance rights extending to television.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

However locating and contacing the original author can be quite difficult. Some people will say that this is Franks trick while other will claim that Frank ripped it off from Bob etc etc...
