Just saying hello

Postby Taylor » Jun 30th, '05, 20:23

Hello all :D

I'm realtively new to this. I've been learning card magic for a few months now and thought it be wise to get into a good forum and seek advice from those with the experience.

Cheers (22:EN)

Thanks. I was beging to think no one was here. :D

So how long have you been learning the art of magic? and do you know of any really good card books ro preferably DVDs ?

I have just purchased RRTCM & EOCT and I am finding both mind boggling. Reading some of the posts about RRTCM I dont think its going to be for me because I pick things up better from watching clips rather than reading. I got RRTCM because a friend said it was a fantastic book to start with.

i've only been learning card magic seriously, for 3 or 4 weeks. i can barely do much more than handle a deck :P I practice a lot, and I'm having fun doing it so i'll get better in time hopefully :P

I've also got RRTCM and i quite like it, but there isnt nearly enough diagrams for my liking. I seem to learn better from DVD's also.

The dvd's i have are Jeff McBrides The Art of Card Manipulation Vol 1 to 3, Basic Card Technique with Richard Kaufman, On the Pass with Richard Kaufman, Oz Pearlman's Born to perform and Lennart Green's Green Magic vol 5 ( i want more or Lennart Green he's amazing! :P ) oh and Derren Brown's Devils Picturebook.

The other book i've got is Harry Lorayne's Close up card magic.

What's the EOCT book ?

as far as DVD's go i like the Basic Card technique which teaches quite a lot and also Born to perform

Out of the two it's a close call, i think i'd rather *watch* Born to perform as i really like Oz's style and there's sections of him performing on the streets to random people :) but learn from Basic Card Technique, as it teaches more and shows with better angles. I cant remember Basic card technique teaching many or any tricks/routines which Born to perform does.

I hope my crappy reviews help a little :P

I think Oz's style is fantastic and have got alot of his stuff which a friend gave me. It has most of the card tricks Oz does and they are all tutorials.

EOCT = Encyclopedia of card tricks by Jean Huggard > Good book, but I don't know some of the terminology yet. :D

I'm sure members of this forum wont mind helping you out with terminoligy , as long as it doesnt give the tricks away :)

I think I will be ok.

Do you know of any Magic clubs around? I have been reading one of the posts by R Carlsen (I think) and he seems to think it is a great idea to get into a society or club if you can.

Thats ok.

I just been looking on google and found one in Doncaster which isnt that far away.

You need to audition for it though which is a bit scary considering I only know the basics and haven't even got a routine yet.

Auditioning would put me off :P

At least that shows they'd only accept people who are serious about magic :)

Have a look at http://www.ipswichmagicalsociety.co.uk/linsocuk.htm for a list of clubs and societies in the UK.

It's off putting to new magicians :P but they'll want to see that you're going to stick it out for a while, so they dont get people joining and leaving all the time :o

By the time i get to a level where i feel comfortable performing for people i dont know, is probably the time everyone would benefit me joining a society, and when it wouldnt seem off putting :P

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

You should find everything you need in one place.

Let me know how RRTCM goes,

Vic

Hi Taylor,

Welcome to the boards.

If you are wanting somewhere local and are free on a Saturday then you could take a trip to Magick Enterprises in Sheffield. It is a great magic shop and there is always someone in (only Saturday's though  ) to demonstrate tricks and give advice.
The owner, Russel Hall, is a really nice guy but it can be difficult to catch him in as he is often out at conventions.

Maybe I will see you there sometime. :D
