Shape of Astonishment

Postby katrielalex » Jul 12th, '05, 19:57

I make entirely too many videos, don't I!

OK, last one for the time being.

This one is Shape of Astonishment, from Paul Harris' Art of Astonishment vol.1 tape (which, by the way, is excellent :)).

DOUBLE EDIT: Back up again - comments welcome :)

Enjoy!

Kati

N.B. This was made with a different camera, so hopefully the quality will be a bit better. Unfortunately, this one has a terrible mike, so the sound is awful. Ah well, can't have everything .

Kati, well done for having a go at an effect which is well away from the norm. You presented it well :) . A few points to mention though; firstly, the "move" (i hope you know what I mean) should be easily covered by the foil, but I still spotted it. Secondly, when placing the coin on the spectators hand, make sure you don't make a big thing about it because they will easily work out how you managed it. My attention was drawn to this point because of the audible sound from the coin, and it should be alot easier to hide when using a persons hand. Finally, just so you know, those three "prongs" on the "logo" of the coin are the Prince of Wales' crest.

Other than that, it was fantastic, well done and keep them coming; it's great to see well presented and well performed tricks. :)

All the best,

Will Wood

Ah - thanks on the prongs as I got sort of lost for words :).

I only just started this recently so I'm not that good at it yet.

I've taken down the video as IMHO it amounts to exposure. I'll refilm it if and when I can give this effect the quality it deserves.

Until then, please PM me and I'd be happy to give you the link.

Well, I have never seen this trick before, so, from me, you get very nice words. I liked it alot, and keep praticing on it. After reading the comments above, I understand the trick, and I must agree with them. But for a layman, I can't believe he/she could ever understand it.... Anyway, make it even smoother, and you got a killer routine.

This is new to me, so I can't comment bad - I wouldn’t anyway because I feel this is a very good affect, I wouldn’t myself do these type of tricks, but I’m impressed, good going.

Is Art of Astonishment a book or video and if so would you reccomend me requesting it for my birthday which is in a little over a month. I heard that it is great. Are the effects hard to perform and do they require anything that you wouldnt find in a kitchen such as a TT or wax or IT???

Try a search in the Reviews Section for more information, but The Art of Astonishment is primarily a 3 volume set of books but there is also a tape displaying a few of the tricks. It is a classic series of texts and in my opinion should be in every magicians Library. There is a wealth of knowledge that you can keep going back to again and again. Paul Harris also has some very interesting things to say about what Astonishment really is. I'm afraid I can't comment on the video because I've never seen it, but my understanding is it is more of a show case of some of the material in the books (there's no way you could show and explain all of the tricks in the books on one tape). I hope that helps, but like I say, look it up in the reviews section for more information.

All the best,

Art of Astonishment volumes don't have tons of tricks like perhaps Michael Ammar's or Mark Wilson's books do. There are quite a few tricks in there but, as I mentioned above the tricks per page ratio isn't as high as others but you do get some high quality stuff. It's difficult to recommend anything on this basis as it all depends on what else you have and what things you like doing. I bought all 3 volumes a couple of years ago and have read them through several times just for the sheer pleasure of reading them rather than selecting and perfecting the tricks shown. That's just the way I am, I'm afraid!
