Overkill

Postby rcarlsen » Jul 16th, '05, 12:24

This trick can be found on the Ammar tapes, "Easy to master card miracles", volume 2, and it's by Harris/Ackerman/Emberg

This is the trick.
A deck is given the spec. He's asked to select a small packet of cards, 1-20 cards and put them aside,. Without you looking, he is asked to count off the number of cards he selected, and remember that number. Then YOU count off 20 cards on the table from the remaining cards, face up. You then count this cards, and give each of the cards a number, from 1-20. You ask the spec to remember the card that his number (the freely number of cards selected from the deck) gets on. Now, you magically square it all up, and you myserously reveal the card, in number of ways. You can do it the mental way, or any other way (ideas below). You say it's the, let's say, "6 of clubs"... The spec is surprised, how can you know? Then you say, well, the reason for me knowing, is that the 6 of clubs is also the card that is on top of you counted off number of cards. He turns his pile, and yes, that's the 6 of clubs as well. Then you spread the deck and there's also ONE card that has a red back - the 6 of clubs. Now, of course, you also have a prediction, on a piece of paper, which also says 6 of clubs. GREAT !

Now, some ideas
I did this trick for a couple of friends last night, and I added more mentalism to it. First of all, I went to the table, and presented a piece of paper, folded up,very small. I told them, that I have a prediction for tonight, and asked someone to take care of my paper. Then I went through the trick as explained above. Now, as I am about to reveal or tell him the name of the card, I take the hands of my audience (a woman of course), and I tell her to pass on her thoughts to me. Of course, here I add the Copperfield joke, "Oh, not those kind of thoughts....", and you always get a laugh. Then you start to reveal it... It's black....... It's clubs..... etc.... And they are amazed ! Then you tell them about the bottom/top card that is also the same card, and reveal the red back card as well. Then..... the paper.... You remind them about the paper.... and they unfold it, and WOW. Etc....

Final kicker
Now, I decided to drive this even longer. I have developed, with a friend of mine, a SMS service (short message system). Now you don't need this, but it makes it even cooler, since we can control the sender name of the SMS. As I do the trick, everyone is so occupied... I take one of my hands down my pocket, click one button on my celluar, and a sms is sent to the girl. Then, depending on if she notices that she get's the sms or not, I say "Now, check your celluar....". There is a message from "MAGICIAN" (no telephone number, just a text sender), with the content "Your selected card of the day will be 6 of clubs". Last night she did check the time when the message was received, and she noticed that it was sent while the trick was going on. How could that be? I was doing the trick !!

The reaction of the final kicker last night, was totally amazing. Someone had their tounge on the floor, while others just shaked their head and looked weird at me. Pretty cool looking eyes and reactions.

Hope you like it :)

Don't you need the spectators' cell phone # in order to text them? Aside from that, it sounds like it would be a killer climax.

Yes, I would need that. If you are in a party of friends, that should be smallest problem to get.

Blimey! Just been watching this on my Ammar DVD's. Thought it was a good effect, but a little bit weak at the finish. The ideas presented have added loads of extra value to the effect. Many thanks!

Nice idea..

I tend to use the "overkill" to the limit with sealed predictions, card in wallet and then a variation on the phone thing where I phone my son and get him to tell the spectator the card (saw this once somewhere but can't remember where.. basically all I say is "Hi... tell then the card they picked" and that's all they here from me whilst I'm on the phone).

This DVD has some really good effects on it that get fantastic reactions.
