Magic for a 6-year old

Postby katrielalex » Jul 29th, '05, 22:42

Hi there!

My family and I were eating dinner at a friend's house recently and I was showing everyone a few tricks. The six-year-old daughter was very interested in the magic and her father asked me if I could recommend any very easy tricks that she could do.

I showed the Floating Match On Card and she loved that.

I was thinking along the lines of:

Thanks Bananafish!

kind of thing but I don't know - what do you recommend? What do you think of the ones listed above - could they be done by a 6-year-old?

Ideally, if there are cards they will have to be mini as she has very small hands still...

Kati

Ball and Vase is a good start for someone that young.

Cups and Balls

Money Making Machine - I don't know the official name. Person sticks a slip of paper between two rollers, turns the crank and prints out a real bill

I bought my nephew a magic set for Christmas, and to my amazement,
he picked up the method of the Svengali deck rather quickly. He even (without ever seeing it done) developed his own color change concept. He was 6 at the time. Sure, it was easy to spot, but I thought showing that kind of creativity was pretty cool.

If she can handle the cards, the Svengali is an option.

I'd almost say something like Black and White Surprise - but that's pricey. Perhaps the Penguin version - Color Deception Brass. It's super easy to do, and for most people to see a 6 year old do that one, it would probably knock some socks off.

I agree with the suggestion of a Svengali deck and this was one of the first decks that I bought my daughter when she was learning.

How about dynamic coins? It's also a nice, simple trick and because of it being self working she can concentrate on the presentation. I'd also recommend coin squeeze.

Cups and Balls

the one where you put a coin in a little plastic container and it then vanishes and can be made to reappear ( coin slide? )

In fact Kati,

I have a boxed set of Marvin's magic cups and balls (plastic) that you can have, free of charge but only for this purpose.

PM me with your address and I'll post out to you on Monday.

Don't forget The Works if you have one close by! At the moment they're doing a boxed set with Imp in Bottle, a small wand, two plastic rings and a length of rope along with a book of other effects - £4.99 or thereabouts - and all designed for the younger magish. They're also doing the full set of WOW Street Magic for £1.49 a box and each one contains three or more tricks.

There must be different promotions in different branches of the Works. I have found two local branches and theyu don't seem to have these items in stock at the moment.

Howver, have you seen the magic box? It's asmall wooden box with a concealed method of opening which is quite cunning. I has surprised me so far by fooling everyone and it cost just £1.49. I can't understand why people just can't use their observation skills to work this one out :?
