How old were you...

Postby wingman04 » Aug 4th, '05, 23:50

How old were you when you started magic and how long did it take to have enough tricks to do a show.

I am 15 now and think it will be about 5 to 10 years before im good enough to do a show.

I just got into magic 2 weeks ago after watching the Criss Angel show on TV.

Message from Mods - we've had this 'How old were you' thread before so no need to Poll for another one.

I started magic at about 10 but really got into magic at about 14 and did a starter (1 trick) for some clowns this spring at 17. so it took 3 years to do a onstage trick.

Started an interest - 6
Started tricks - 8
Now - 16 and making my own effects

I have never done a proper show mabye a few card tricks in a new years party and some at school but that's it.

IMO I don't really like Street magic. It's not really my thing and with all of the secrets beeing flooded out now it might be a good idea to keep away from that area. I have always liked mentalism effects but I tend to use them like I got a really big brain and I remember a lot of stuff and that I can calcualte things really quickly (I have yet to try three tricks involving a calendar on someone). but basically I just do Card and Mentalism tricks.

Current favourite magic source: Ian Snow. Ok not a good magic shop or a place to get stuff but I have found some good gimmicks there when I was younger. Secondly it's cheap and it's the nearest to a magic shop that's near where I live.

The only magic book I have is Jean Hugards "Encyclopedia of Card Tricks" which has been quite uefull lately (I'm currently trying to memorise the Nikola card system  ). Other than that I can't buy much stuff because a. I'm poor :( b. My CUPS hasn't developed yet.

So I just scrounge for any free tricks and that may be why I give my own creations away .

I was about 10 and I did my first show at when I was 11. That sounds really good cos I'm now 33 - but I stopped doing magic at around 13 and started again about 3 years ago.

Cool - I did that a month ago also from Encyclopedia. It's really great - I haven't done much to take advantage of the actual system, but having a memorized deck has opened up a whole range of options.

The secret to a succesful rain dance is all about timing
