Mind, Deception and Truth.....

Postby JP.Magic » Aug 16th, '05, 16:06

Is there a parallel between the magic of deception and the
deception of the mind?

Magic is done intentionally, the other is usually unintentional
unless it involves the lies and deception of politics, media, business,
etc. Are not most people unaware of their own deceptions? Their deceptions are unintentional.

Yet beyond all the deception always lies the truth.

The universe radiates a deception of its own. It radiates its own
illusion of light. It projects the illusion of life using the mirror of
the universal mind. So to know the truth, one must look beyond the deception.
One must look into the heart of where all things arise...into the
unknown itself. Only there in that unfathomable realm can one behold the
truth.

Ah... but what of the robotic nano people from Zog!? Do they not exist on planes so vast and unfathomable that they themselves doubt their own existance, infact choosing to live solitary lives in caves dug with plastic spoons they found at the fast food restaurant down the road which noone visits because noone thinks it exists?
Besides, they'd rather die anyway, it doesnt matter how, hunger would do!! Life for them is depressing.
Too bad they never took the time to realise that they are infact immortal and made of swedish moose milk cheese (the most expensive cheese on Earth: fact)!

I think I raise an equally valid point.

Hehe, hope I didn't offend at all in my post since I now realise you're quite interested in philosophy and spirituality (read you're profile) and I got carried away a bit. It doesn't sound like you were though! :D

Does anyone ever wonder why human beings can be deceived by magic? Hmm

Because we use expectation to judge and navigate in the world.

Eg.
You are used to seeing things fall down, so when someone lets go of something you expect to see it do so. When it does not, you are astounded because what you are seeing is something that is contrary to past experience.

I think this is the major reason why people can be decieved by magic. If you don`t expect anything, magic would mean nothing. So if you want to capitalise on this, find an assumption which most people will probably hold true and design a way to break that assumption (or at least make them doubt its validity). You would have then performed a bit of magic :D

(Obviously your own ethics are key here, most people agree that you cannot communicate with the dead. So don`t find a way to cheat them into thinking that you can, that would be wrong  (cough cough John Edwards cough cough charlatan)

Terry Goodkind writes about this in his 'Sword of Truth' books. It's in 'The Wizards First Rule', and the rule is:

'People will believe anything they want to be true, or fear to be true.'

I can recommend reading his books. In the series, you learn a new 'Wizard's Rule' in each book (there are 9 so far).

The Wizard book sounds interesting...

Why does the human mind make false assumptions about what it perceives? We obviously filter information and only SEE a section because of the screen of the past...

So a trick can be made around this premise. I feel to understand this deeply opens a Pandora’s box...

This connects very deeply to many principles of Eastern teachings..

They are fiction books based around a world of fantasy. Check out this link to see the 9 Wizards Rules:

http://www.terrygoodkind.com/Truth.php

They are very profound books though, drawing a lot of parallels on the world we live in today... religion, philosophy, ethics, all detailed in them.

Personally I love the books and can recommend them to anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre. The Wizards Rules are a pretty good guide to living your own life too...

Cheers,
