False Riffle

Postby katrielalex » Aug 19th, '05, 07:04

Hi all!

I feel a bit silly making so many videos, but when I did the false riffle on my flourish video, I got a lot of comments - with which I agree - about the strip-out being obvious. Therefore, I was fiddling around with the riffle looking for a better one and I came up with this. It's basically the same move but on the other side so it's entirely covered by my left hand.

Click here to watch the false riffle shuffle, with my strip-out.

This one is better, but I think it would look even better if you swing the cards the other way around, as you did in the first movie, but try to still have the "reveling" part under your left hand. :)

NICE!!!!

I don't think much needs to change here. I'm keeping in mind that you would probably NEVER pull such a move for a spectator at that angle, and even now it's much harder to pick up on what you're doing. From a more traditional angle, I'd wager that move is nigh invisible.

Great work! And as for posting so many videos, who cares!??! You like making them, we like watching them. Keep going!

This move is used with misdirection and with the correct misdirection, it is very effective. When I do it, I try to keep the jog covered all the time. I use my right hand to cover it and my left hand to do the strip out. I won't post a video of me doing it, because I can't perform it well.

Here's a master's tip from Oz from Watch Magic: Practice your normal riffle shuffle and a cut. Then perform the false riffle with the strip out until it looks identical and you can do it without looking at the deck.

Here's the false riffle shuffle that I use. It looks so obvious what you're doing but its actually really effective. Let me know if you'd like the workings and I'll post it in the Tutorial File Sharing forum :)

Hmm, I don't find this too convincing. it's very nice performed, but is the effect good enough? I think that even laymen expect that when you do a riffle shuffle like this, cards should "come together" somehow. Just my thought....

That's exactly what I thought at first but I've tried it quite a few times and it works great. It may also have to do with the patter you use. For example, when talking about gambling and casinos I say:

"In a casino, the cards are shuffled (make a big thing about riffling the cards together) and cut twice (strip the cards out in a cutting motion)."

I don't make a big thing of it, I just do it and carry on with my effect.

It's also worth mentioning that if it works for Doc Eason, I don't see why it can't work for me :)

All the best,

this may be out of order but your both making things too complicated..the whole purpose of a shuffle is for the cards to look mixed.. try a shank shuffle or even a zarrow shuffle...alternatively just do a table riffle shuffle with a push through and strip out. if i have time later i'll post a vid of what i mean

Goodness - I'm surprised that you get away with it! Having said that, I'll give it a go and see what happens. As you imply, misdirection is needed.

ok heres a very quickly done video of a zarrow shuffle, a shank shuffle and a push through and strip out.. nothing complicated but they leave the deck in red black order.

Wow.....

I stand in awe mog!

I'd love to be able to do a false riffle shuffle like that, but believe you me, if I could I would! I spent about 10 minutes on the zarrow shuffle and I didn't even do one right, let alone invisible. The shank shuffle seemed a bit too obvious to me - but then spectators can be unusually obtuse sometimes (and it was done excellently :)). And the third shuffle...wow, wow, wow!

You're brilliant mog!

Do I get away with my pitiful variant? I don't know. As I mentioned in another post, nobody's ever called me on it. However, spectators do have a tendency not to mention if they see something, so they may well have noticed and just not said anything. They did seem to like the effect though...(emerge triumphant...).
