High Impact For Beginers?

Postby SirRawlins » Aug 25th, '05, 15:36

Hello Chapps,

As I'm sure you can see this is my first post on the Talk Magic forums, nice to see they did a good job hashing the WowBB templates .. looks neat.

I'm pretty new to performing magic, only been practicing cards for a while, long time poker player though so used to the handling of a deck.

I have been spending alot of time just reading these forums and taking in the sights, alot of tallented people here thats for sure. I have invested in a few bits and pieces to get myself started, most helpfull so far has been Oz Pearlman's Born To Perform DVD ... very nice little routines, got most of them down now and learning the flourishes and polish of the patter.

What I'm after is some HIGH IMPACT routines and flourishes to wow the specs, family do's at christmas and things like that, you know the deal! (if you will excuse the pun)

Thought i would get your opinions on whats worth looking at and whats not ... quite into my colour changes and things like that as far as flourishes, not really into my prop magic with false decks, magnets and strings attached ...

But, show me somthing that'll knock my socks off!

Cheers,

Rob

Routines - Born to Perform's routines. Excellent stuff.

I also want to try my hands on Lee Asher's "The Asher Twist" because it looks just TOO amazing. Just go here and go to watch my magic to check it out.

Flourishes - I'd recommend Dan and Dave's System if you already know some basics and Brian Tudor's Revolution Cut (you're going to need it for this DVD). Or you can pick up a copy of Jerry Cestowski's Encyclopaedia of Playing Card Flourishes on Flourishman.

You should introduce yourself in the introductions section of the forum. Welcome to TM however!

Hi Rob and welcome to TM.

So refreshing to have a new member who's not trying to sell prohibited products, asking for free secrets or slagging someone off

With you being very familiar with handling cards through playing poker, you've certainly got a great head start and now that you've bought Born To Perform you'll no doubt learn some great moves. I've got this as have a growing number of members and it's a great choice.

I recently bought the Thirteen DVD which is billed as the 13 greatest and most easiest to do professional card tricks. Kati wrote a review elsewhere on this site so it's worth a search. For the money, I'd recommend this DVD as a companion to Born To Perform (what do you think Kati? ) as there are some good card tricks here, and a few that are not so good but I will say that your what I don't like is purely down to personal choice and nothing more. All are certainly easy to learn.

http://www.magictricks.co.uk/prodlist.asp and then type thirteen in the seach box

anyway, enjoy and see you on the boards

I'd recommend Easy To Master Card Miracles by Ammar.

Each DVD gives you about 10 or so effects which are easy to learn (if not requiring varying amounts of practice). On each DVD I'd say there are between 5-7 effects which, if presented right, will definately get good reactions (I use some of them all the time.. Jazz Aces, Colour Changing Deck etc..)

Oz's DVD is also very good (as has been said).

Hope this helps

You may or may not have come across Out Of This World, that's a killer trick, there are lots of versions about, the one I do is in Volume 3 of The Art Of Astonishment VOlume 3, but in here, it's called Galaxy.

Good Luck.

Hrm...could be.

ETMCM would be better (methinks) but it's much more expensive and this is definitely in the running.

Kems, If I don't tell you how to levitate a camel you won't get the hump will you ??

ps. I suspect you mean the version that comes in a packet of 20 and not the big bu**er that spits at you :?

Rob, to confirm what has already been said, If you want a knock out effect for family and friends go for Out of This World. I know there are numerous versions but read the links on the forum about them and PM me if you ain't sure which to go for.

Have I had a wierd 2 days :? I've just done a 500 mile round trip to Southampton to my uncles funeral. We were sat in the local club this afternoon after the funeral and eating from the buffet when the caterer who was carving the ham at the time fell over and died :?

For a killer effect that is relativly easy to do. (Once you have mastered the angles of the particular sleight involved it should not be too hard to do)

Check out, Design For Laughter in Royal Road to Card Magic. Very, very nice effect. Can play it out as straight magic or add in a mind reading twist. I overlooked it when I first got that book until a friend of mine showed me it and I really saw it's potential then. I have had some excellent reactions with it.

Perfect effect really. Does not even have to be your deck of cards or a deck of playing cards. Top Trumps, Collector Cards, Playing Cards, Football Stickers. It works well on all of them. Impromptu too.

I learnt Out of this world from Derren Browns Video..

When the time is right I still use it and it is a mind blowing effect..

High Impact For Beginners

Postby Timmy Y » Sep 10th, '05, 13:16

I agree about Design For Laughter, I've had some very unexpected reactions to it, lots of fun with friends who really like to see you mess-up! I like "Now you See It" also from Royal Road, has a similar "oops I messed that up" feel to Design For Laughter.
