False Shuffles - Some more

Postby Johnny Bravo » Sep 11th, '05, 03:57

Can anyone recommend any books, links or tell of any false overhand shuffles that either: -

Bring the bottom card to the top.
I'm not comfortable with running off the last few cards singly for bringing the bottom to the top & I still frequantly drop the last 2 cards together or I look awkward as I slow down the shuffle at this point or bodge up some way. Have been working on this for ages but I don't get any better. :(

Retaining the top 1, 2, 3 or 4 cards.
I am find injogging a card very awkward & this is the only kind of shuffle I've read about for this useage.

Have RR & Card College, have I missed something? Any help, or pointers would be appreciated.

Get 'Expert Card Technique' by Jean hugard and Frederick Braue.

This has some really useful false shuffles, including how to accomplish the feats you listed. It really is well worth the price($6.00)!

You can download it in e-book form:

For the retention of top stock (ie the top few cards) Johnny, try out the Hindu shuffle. It's mentioned in Royal Road to Card Magic and Mark Wilson's Complete Course, but not sure about the two you've mentioned above. Also, a good, or bad riffle shuffle can retain the top stock too. You can probably figure that one out for yourself.

As for getting a card to the top, the Overhand Shuffle Control is the only way I do it, I think. It'll probably just come to you one day.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Zack, yes with a false riffle or hindu I can keep the top stock in place but just would like to be able to do this in a natural manner with an over hand shuffle.

Bought the ebook Expert Card Technique, have only skimmed at the mo but again the shuffles mentioned there all require in jogging. So maybe if someone comes across this topic & knows of any extra they can post their method.

I'm afraid the in-jog is the only way I know to retain the top stock if you must do the overhand shuffle.

Sorry Johnny.

ok for bringing the bottom card to the top why not use a use a normal overhand shuffle but leave the bottom 5 or 6 cards in your hand so it looks "normal" then double undercut the bottom card to the top?

what is it about injogs that you dont like? if you elaborate more then maybe we could help more? if it helps i'll make a quick video of how i use injogs for you (to be fair it might make matters worse but i can only try  )

Well, you could always turn the deck round and do an overhand shuffle bringing the top card to the bottom - as long as you slip the first card before they can see it they won't notice anything fishy.

In addition to Mog about your in jogs are you worried that they stick out too much?

This can be remedied by making your shuffle sloppy looking.

Also if your shuffles look sloppy then as well as hiding jogs makes it give the spec a sense of "Oh He actually is just Shuffling the cards" instead of
"that looks a bit too neat i donn't shuffle like that i'll watch extra carfully for one of them funny moves".

Well they probably wouldn't think exactly that but it work from a phsycological point of view.

For retaining the top few cards with a overhand shuffle I don't do any injogging. I just hold a the card so the top stack is against my fingertips and the face of the cards can be seen by everyone and just take cards out of the middle rather than from the top then finish the overhand shuffle by shuffling sections off as you normally would leaving the top stack completely intact. This has got me out of situations where the spectator thinks they've seen me control their card to the top. They often want to see me overhand shuffle the cards just cause they trust it. This way is really easy and is never spotted.

As for moving a card from bottom to top:
Are you familiar with a double undercut? This is wear a card is taken from the top and left at the bottom whilst the rest of the cards are brought back to the top. Well I've practiced doing the opposite cut cards to the bottom and bringing the bottom card back to the top with them. Since I don't know what this is actually called I will logically call it the double overcut.

Try these. See how they work for you.

I personally find the hindu shuffle very verstatile....you can really practice one shuffle with a bunch of variations. I use it both false and real in almost every routine I do...I can force, move cards, retain top and or bottoms, pass to the top, and a variety of other required things.....I think it is well worth researching, and learning.

I agree Moodini the hindu shuffle is a good one to use and can be used with subtle variations to retain top stock, bottom stock or even the entire order of the cards.

The really crucial question is why do you find it difficult to injog???
This should be incredibly easy. Are you remembering to use your left little finger correctly (assuming you are right-handed like me). If so, this should be a piece of cake; if not, you would probably struggle to control the cards.

I don't think an outjog helps (as suggested above). Since this is towards the audience it is much harder to conceal. Anyway, you need to fix your injog

I have Royal Road to card magic and I found it difficult to run and injog cards then I found that i was actually shufflleing wrong. I was dropping cards instead of pulling them off with my thumb. Once I sorted this i was fine.
