If you have Born To Perform then you have one of the best AC routines right there...

Not to be picky but in the interest of historical accuracy, I'm pretty sure I suggested this to you first:

make sure you have something REALLY quick but impressive to show them which doesn't require them to do anything other than watch, no-more than 30 seconds from start to finish.

But anyway, for a good quick trick then check out Ellusionist's Ninja 1. It teaches you parts of a big routine called the Vegas Card Cheat but picking individual phases could be what you're looking for if you change the presentation.

Check out the video

If this is the trick I'm thinking of, it's the routine where they tip the pass?

I'm not going to go into that but I would really steer clear of tipping any secrets like that as the pass is a very useful sleight to have and ruining any spectators for it is not my idea of a good trick...

I'm sorry evmeister that i did not give you credit. but in my defence i was quoting moodini and not stated that he told me first. but thanks for the suggestion all the same

I wasn't suggesting that Kemo follow the presentation ideas, I was mearly suggesting he use the technique. It's very quick and a whole lot more visually believable as an ambitious card phase than the standard phases which has an instant impact on whoever you're performing it for. The only problem you'd have to get around is whether you're using duplicates, which I have ideas to get around if I use this routine.

To be honest I'm still a relative amateur to card magic (6 months to date) and I can't do a convincing pass yet (i've only started working on the pass over the last week). However, in my head I've reached the point where I'm trying to do some original stuff. At the moment I'm working on my own version of Bodyguards which I learnt from a Penguin download by Jay Sankey.

Don't know if my ideas for this quick trick using a pass intrigues you Kemo. If you're interested then PM me and I'll share my ideas with you. But bare in mind that I'm still a relative amateur with regard to both doing and creating magic.

Yes it is, but I don't follow that routine. I just use the moves Brad teaches for other things, ie. AC :D

If cheap and cheerful is what you're after then go down to your local newsagents with a pound coin and get a deck of cards and just go wild with them. You might even get some change. I spend alot of time amusing people down the pub using just a regular deck of cards normally and get great reactions, and I've only been doing magic for 5-6 months.

Kemo,
Two things will get you through any street situation:

First, not everybody -- sometimes, not ANYbody -- likes card tricks.

Second, and most important, rejection is part of the job; just don't take it personally; it isn't directed at YOU but at magic (maybe they aren't in the mood right now; maybe the don't want to watch because of religious beliefs; maybe. . . who knows>)

cheers,

Unfortunately rejection and a negative response, even of the most polite kind, is a fact of magic and of life in general. I know of no sure fire way to assess whether folks are going to be receptive but you will probably get a very good indication right at the start depending on how you approach them. What works for you won’t necessarily work for others but if you approach in a friendly, non challenging way, you're more likely to get their attention and acceptance. Something like 'Can I show you something strange and possibly wonderful?' or something along those lines might (no guarantees!) give you an extra few seconds to show your stuff and avoid the immediate negative response which you are worrying about. As you do this sort of thing more often and adapt your approach you'll find that you'll be able to assess folks better from their body language, non-verbal signals etc and you'll be able to walk away from a negative situation before anyone gets upset or annoyed.

Totally out of the magic or performing world, most standard sales persons business training courses will deal with all this - the average sales person needs to know how to get round the same things than magicians do and the processes are identical. It's all in the approach and the way you present yourself. You've had the wisdom to ask the question which shows you're thinking along the right lines. Be yourself, be friendly, be interesting. After that it's up to you and your own skills.

Magician: You're thinking of a card. Could it be...the 8 OF DIAMONDS?
Spectator: Erm...No, no it wasn't.
Magician: You weren't thinking of the 8 OF DIAMONDS?
Spectator: No, I wasn't.
Magician: Well I bet you are now!!!!

HA,very funny I know some card tricks already ,any other ones with out cards but with a coin that i could take from the audience? :) :?:

Street Entertainment

Postby MagicTom » Nov 16th, '05, 18:49

I love street entertainment. I havent done much i admit but i love it when i do it.

I agree it is not easy.

I have only done shows where i have an area where i perform rather than approaching people personally i do a general stage type show.

I find that you need BIG effects to attract a good crowd. I have only used my Staright Jacket escape once in a "outdoor" situation but found that is my best act for attracting people. Once i've done that i move onto my Vent act to keep them.

I am hoping to try out the "approaching people" next time i do a street event. Do you need permission for close up?? I always get permission to do a stage show (obviosuly) for the area I'm performing on.
