Spinning cards better...

Postby Riptide » Nov 17th, '05, 01:46

I'm working on a card trick, but for the most part this is something that, while it is vital for the presentation to work right, could be useful for when you just want to toss a card at someone.

What I'm running into problems with is getting a good spin on the card I'm working with.

Over long distance (room length or more) it's simple to throw a card and give it a good spin simply by throwing it like a frisbee (wrist action). But for the magic trick I'm practicing it needs to spin rather quickly with little forward motion.
I'm having good results with my right hand, however, as I am right handed, my left hand ... well. Let's just say that I probably shouldn't perform the trick in front of anyone if I have no choice but to use my left hand.

I'm going to practice a lot, which is usually what is needed, but has anyone found certain methods that improve the time in which it takes to get it right?

It depends HOW you spin it and how far you want it to go.

There are many methods of spinning cards. The spinning card can be flicked out of the deck or just thrown.

I'm assuming you just want to throw the card. I like to use the flicking action as you described, but for accuracy, I use other methods. The Encyclopaedia of Playing card Flourishes teaches many methods but because of the rules, I cannot teach them.

The boomerang card is a nice effect which is good if you want to learn to juggle cards.

Well, I'm a bit new, so I'm not sure what I can and can't say regarding to details of the trick I need to perfect this for. :?

The card is thrown, spinning, from one hand to the other and back.

I suppose that, with a lot of practice, you could do this with no "magic" at all, just some decent skill. But the spinning part is what I'm focussed on right now. :)

Is it a requisite for the trick that the card being tossed must travel far otherwise Le Paul's fast one handed shuffle (something like that) might suffice? That might be good for about a metre, although you will certainly have to tweak it to maximise the spin. Alternatively play around with picking up from the deck then about an inch above it bending the card diagonally. Then quickly bend another corner at which point the card will snap out of your fingers, spinning its merry way. The card does tend to flip over (how I've came across it - as way of a fancy reveal) and is almost impossible to aim..

Just an idea.

On the subject of practice, I find once I vaguely understand the concept and can do it slowly rather than gradually building speed up I do it as fast as possible. I often use several decks of card, cycle through them without stopping, repeating the move in quick succession and executing the trick at the speed you would want to perform it.

Well, to be honest, what I'm trying to do seems to be mainly a practice routine in itself. :(

I got a package from my father in-law for a gift, and it contained a booklet, a DVD, and some props for a series of levetating card tricks.

What I'm trying to do consists mainly of passing the card from one hand to the other and back. The spinning is part of the way it works, and is somewhat important in keeping those who are watching convinced that the card is not being thrown, but is floating.

I'm guessing it is certainly a beginners for beginners trick, but it's what I have to work with (I'm not infected yet. I'm still pouring my money into my car.... for now. :D )
