Here's a little something I made in spare time.

Fanning

Umm, sorry to be the arbiter of truth, but that wasn't very good.

Your fans were uneven, they were sloppy and ill-defined, sorry dude but it wasn't great.

The cards that I used are really worn in. I just used a bit of fanning powder to aid it. These are the same cards I used in my "The Last Night" video which was a long while ago, so these cards do tend to stick. I should have used another deck but they weren't worn in enough so I decided to use this one.

Why not remake the vid with a properly prepared deck?

As you probably know Jerry says the two things that will determine how good your fans are are deck condition and starting position.

I personally liked it. Fanning is one aspect that I am really having trouble with - don't know why :S. Any help anybody can give me is most welcome. I've been reading "Street Magic" and it has one fan in there - but I can't seem to understand it.

Any help is most welcome.

Cheers people!

Love

Chris

Fanning takes a while to master. You need the right knack to get it good every time. I can't do them perfectly yet. I'm trying to learn the one handed manipulation fan (the one taught in Born to Perform) but very, very large.

I think the best sources to learn fans are in XB (1 hour fanning workshop!) and in Encyclopedia of Playing Card Flourishes.

I have to aggree that this vanish was very obvious, not only in technique but poor judgement of camera position.

As has been said, the fans weren't very smooth and as the old saying goes "a bad workman blames his tools". Fair enough it was an old deck, but it isn't too difficult to get hold of a new deck if you want to show off your fanning skills. Otherwise, as your video proves, it just looks sloppy.

It seems that many of your videos seem rushed and unrefined. Can I suggest you put some major effort into making one thing look perfect at a time and then move onto the next thing.

Specifically, the fans should be faster and smoother. The key to good looking fans is a fluid, confident technique and motion.

All the best,

Will Wood

I actually thought the fans were alright... but you guys are the audience.

I understand that my flipback vanish was obvious and I will try and make it better

You're right, they were alright but you should be striving for perfection. You might not achieve it, but if perfection is your goal all you can do is get better and better.

And like I said, it helps to focus on one thing at a time.

True. With good powdered cards, I can usually get almost perfectly even fans. But doing everything in one take is very hard to get every single move perfect.
