one-handed cuts

Postby moonbeam » Jan 3rd, '06, 11:24

OK I've done a search and found quite a bit on 1 handed shuffles (I think I need to learn to walk before I can run lol !!) but I'm just after a link/vid showing a basic one-handed cut so I can suss out where I need to grip the deck etc.
I can do the 1 where you hold the deck with 1 of the long sides of the deck running along the 4 fingers and the other long side is gripped by the thumb. You then release the grip on the thumb so that part of the deck falls into the palm of your hand and this packet is pushed up by the index finger, whilst the remaining 3 fingers maintain a grip on the deck, until it is high enough to be squared up on the top of the deck (if you catch my drift !!). This version is very easy once you know where to grip the cards - even my missus nearly mastered it after only a few mins of me showing her
The version I'm after is where the deck is held at 90 degrees to this - 1 short end of the cards is gripped by some of the fingers (how many - I do not know  ) and the other short end is gripped by the thumb. I can't cut the deck in the same manner as above 'cos the cards are now longways on and I'd need my fingers to be about 3" longer
Ive tried picking the cards up n swinging them to the side (for want of a better description) but I just end up scooping the cards back up off the floor
I saw my cousin perform this ages ago and I can't for the life in me remember how he did it.
Any help/tips would be greatly appreciated cos I'm getting a lil' fed up of picking my cards up off the floor :?

Sounds like you've mastered the Charlier Cut. It's simple yet impressive. There are a few variations on that cut as well which are a little more complicated, but nowhere near impossible. If you're looking for resources, well, I don't know of any free ones but the variations I came across in Complete Course; Expert at the Card Table covers a few one-handed cuts, you might find the one you're thinking of in there. If you don't have it it's worth picking up anyway, there's some useful sleights and stuff in there.

The first cut I think you are referring to is a Charlier cut. A good substantial 'real' cut. An easy learning curve for this one, for all hand sizes.

The second cut I believe is a one-handed swing cut, and mastery of this one is far, far trickier.

The positioning of the thumb is paramount to success, and also a slack grip. You will need to fish and learn for the correct position to cradle the top of the deck so it is held by gravity rather than pressure too.

For all card sleights, supple fingers are a must. The old favourite for me is always the same—get a decent soft squash ball and just play with it in your hand, stretching your fingers, building muscle strength.

Good luck with this one—performed correctly, it looks fabulous (and it appears in one of my favourite movies—Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels)

Or you could ask me. I know over twenty one hand cuts and three different one hand shuffles. It became my intrest not to long ago to learn these and have mastered almost all of them. This is my area of expertise as far as XMC goes.

XMC

Xtreme Motor Cars? Xtremely Many Cards? Xtremely Mobile Cats?

OK, this type of humor is known as "beating a dead horse" so I'll stop it. :D.

By the way, a tip on the Charlier from XB is that if you have your first and pinkie fingers on the short ends of the deck then you can square the deck much more easily after the cut.

About the one-handed swing cut: I've never heard of this but I assume that it involves starting a swing cut then taking the rest of the deck in straddle grip and lifting the cut portion of the deck with thumb and first finger? If not, the way I see it your first finger would have to move out almost 90 degrees to the side -- ouch!

Actually mog, that's 20 one handed cuts, but I agree, I'd love to see this too. Sounds "special".

I don't know if this is what your after but to me it sounds like you're after a cut that I came up (whilst I'm sure it's not original) and have named the leap-frog cut. You can see a video that I made for you on this thread. Hope this helps.

Yes I know quite a few. I've can to the point of creating and learning new ones without much stress. For the last six months I've been in the process of creating a series of (so far) 18 DVD's that teach everything about Card Magic. One of them will teach 20 one hand cuts and four one hand shuffles.

In case you were wondering, these are the Shuffles.

One Hand Weave Shuffle (the classic OH Shuffle)
One Hand Overhand shuffle
One Hand Hindu Shuffle (My own creation)

I have been trying to invent the One Hand Riffle Shuffle. Noone has yet to create one (Not even Jerry or De'vo). If I do, I have a name in the Card Magic world. It would be awsome.

i dont want to sound like I'm putting a downer on things but at 15 years old do you truly believe that you know everything about card magic?

There is a one handed riffle I believe - it's the same action as the one handed faro but if you don't do it perfectly then it's a riffle.

It's on b***** Hard Moves by Ian Kendall.
