Card College

Postby Pitto » Jan 12th, '06, 19:20

I really want the Card College set 1-5 but on some magic sites they are not selling some of the earlier volumes. Does anyone know if they are going out of print?

I would just buy them but i cant afford it yet!

Just wanted you to know - these were the absolute first set of books of magic I ever bought, and yes, they are very good to be books, and probably one of the best sets you can get. Really worth every penny. Good luck.

Round about how much is each volume, and what do they contain?

They're about £25 each although some places will do you a deal if you buy all five.

They're basically an explanation of card sleights, from very simple to pretty complicated, along with a few tricks to demonstrate the moves, and a few essays on presentation, misdirection etc.

Think "Royal Road" but much expanded, and up-to-date.

I concur with both rcarlsen and Saxmads comments. The layout is very much like RRTCM, in that it presents a progressive course on card magic. The writing and description is probably the best I've seen: think hugard with pictures. With the addition of sections on magic theory, often lacking in other books, this is a well rounded offering.

If your a beginner they make for an outstanding, structured course on card magic. If your more advanced they are an excellent reference on sleight of hand and magic theory.

Goto http://www.ellusionist.com/order/card_college_roberto_giobbi.htm for a rundown on what each volume contains. I'm sure there is a more detailed table of contents online, but I couldn't find it.

Is it written in todays language???????

I kind of find it hard to remember to use the 3rd Phlanax of the 2nd finger at the top of the cards while the life life is aligned with the 4th fingers phlanax

:D

lol, Yeah I know what you mean, but on the inside of both covers is a useful explanation of what refers to what. Giobbi also explains the meaning in detail, and his use of the terminology is consistant throughout. Also, he uses line drawings as opposed to photographs, and as he explains this allows them enhance the view of the handling. I think its all done very well, and well worth learning his style of explanation.

It can be confusing at first, but how else do you get exact instructions on the different sleights.

In my opinion, the Card College Series is the best series you can buy if your looking to get into cards. He's clear, he is a brilliant teacher.

Begginer to pro

Postby Pitto » Jan 15th, '06, 19:02

When i read a reviews of this it sounds like it is more in depth than RRTCM. RRTCM doesnt cover all begginer stuff. Ive already got that and know a lot of basics but i wouldn't want to get some books and not all 5. If you get all 5 volumes it sounds like you would know as much as most people about card magic.

Oz Pearlman says if you new everything in all five of those books you would be one of the best card workers around.

It doesnt seem like they're going out of print so i might try and secure a loan from my parents!

All true pitto. Another reason to get all 5 is that they cross reference one another.

Ozs' comments are backed up by Juan Tamariz in the forward of the series. Also remember Roberto is still very much with us, so a volume 6 and beyond is not out of the question.

Good luck persuading your parents.
