Today - With Des and Mel

Postby MagicAL » Jan 17th, '06, 15:25

Ok, I know that the title of this topic has probably got a few of you wondering 2 things...

1. What is a fully functional 30 something doing spending his afternoons watching Des and Mel on ITV?
2. What has Des and Mel got to do with Magic?

I will answer these points one at a time...

Answer 1. I am on hols waiting to start my new job on Thursday, and as its Janaury and nobody has any £, the days are spent vegging in front of the telly. Well only for 3 days anyway.

Answer 2. This afternoon the lovely (IMO) Holly Willoughby and the not quite so lovely (IMO) Stephen Mulhern were on.

They were mainly talking about the Come Ice Dancing thing that they are presenting, but we were informed after the break that Stephen would be doing a magic trick! The actual trick itself was very basic, and magically did not impress me, but I thought his presentation and humour was something that I could really learn something from. I had never seen him present an effect for anybody other than children, and was impressed. I know its a long shot, but did anybody else see it?

P.s. Last time I had a day off and watched the show, they had Alan Astra on! Des and Mel, bringing magical entrertainment into our living rooms! Well to those in the UK and not at work anyway!

P.p.s Message to MODS, I hope this message does not create the screaming madness with regards to Mr. Mulhern again!

I never saw it, even though I knew Mulhern would be on it. Didn't even think there'd be any magic! What did he perform?

Missed it completely. I've got the snooker (Mmmm, lovely snooker) on in the background. I become pretty much nocturnal when the world Championship is on

:) Yes MagicAL, I saw it. MY wife said we'll watch the magic before she looked in on The Afternoon Play, so missing 10 mins of it. Oh the sacrifice.
It was neat..simple but neat. A trait that a lot of magicians forget, often making their routines too long (yes I have done this!) and often too complicated (no I have not done this) Stephen had the card selected, from a well shuffled deck, in a most 'fair' manner. A large kitchen knife appeared and from it some great( but could be dangerous in some magicians' hands) comedy biz. The cards were tossed aloft and the selected car did NOT appear on the blade. How could it. Those in the know realised it was a very, ordinary and slightly vicious looking kitchen knife. The card was then QUICKLY discovered in an envelope( not even sealed to PACE things up) given to Des just after the trick started. Straight forward, funny moments and a climax. What more could you want.
And NO MagicAL you could not take something from SM. That was his personality. Simply learn to make your magic straightforward, truthful in its execution and develop your OWN personality and way of doing things. That we we might stop this endless copying of others. Remember Magic is NOT boring. Only Magicians ARE! Seek originality within yourself.

We dont get enough magic shows on our tv these days. last thing i saw was a bit on the news with a kid doing tricks for the camera.

I was born with Multiple Personality Disorder. Luckily, they are all me, they just dont always get along...

Hmmm, I think you have misunderstood. I never intended to copy anybody, but liked the way he interacted with an adult audience without being seen as being a smart *rse, wierd or just rude as I have seen some other magicians come across (intended or otherwise) . Just appreciating a profesional doing what he does.

I am confident with my own style of performance, and have my own way of presenting effects, as I am sure you have Allen, however I rarely have seen a performance from any profesional magician where I could not appreciate or learn something from them.

Melanie Sykes is more than enough reason for me to come home in the afternoon to watch the telly :-)
