Anyone familiar with an alternative for the "Pass"? Although I never get busted, I just am not comfortable with it in it's old form!

Hi Dano

If you have access to the "Magician Only" section, there is a sub section on Sleights which has a video clip showing the Turnover Pass, which is (in my opinion) much easier than the Classic Pass. If you don't have access (and you are a magician), it is worth trying to get access, since these kinds of tips are often discussed in the "restricted" Magician's section.

Regards... Tony

PS. You're not the only one who can't master the pass, but mine is getting better with practise.

It's funny, when I first started practising the Classic Pass last year, every now and again I would walk up to a mirror and try to carryout this sleight and was always abysmally disappointed.

Now, after nearly six months of practise, I am performing this technique with only average ability and you can still see it, but it is definitely better and I mean faaaarrrr better than when I first started. Don't get me wrong, it is still c*** (not the best) compared to Lawrence’s demonstration of how it should look, but every now and again, I nearly get there and I am practising every day for at least an hour a day (whilst watching TV normally).

Another excellent alternative is LePaul's Spread
pass. I prefer this over all other passes because
the pass occurs as you square up the cards (e.g.
as you execute an expected motion), whereas the
Classic Pass requires you to perform it while
hiding the motion. Not too hard to learn (much
easier than the Classic Pass) and I think has
much better cover. Another excellent alternative
is Bruce Cervon's Free Turn Pass. Rarely seen,
this excellent pass occurs as you perform an
all-around square-up, a common motion for card
workers. Definitely not an easy sleight to learn,
but worth the work. Took me about 6 months to get
comfortable with it. This one is in his "ltra
Cervon" book. The Spread Pass is explained in
"Card Magic of Paul LePaul" and in the Card
College series. Another alternative
is the "Invisible Pass" which combines the first
motions of the Turnover Pass (like a Hermann Pass)
but you turn your left hand palm down as you
complete the pass -- kind of like a "Turnover-
less" Turnover Pass if that makes sense. This
pass is also taught in the Giobbi series. I think
the Turnover Pass is by far the easiest pass to learn.

Thanks,
Kevin

The only one handed 'pass' that I know is just a Charlier Cut used as a pass, that is all the detail I will go into outside the magicians only section, but if you have access to that I would be happy to tell you more.
Hope that helps,
Nick
