Help with Twisted Sister

Postby bowiee2003 » Jan 27th, '06, 20:44

Hello Everyone--

I have just recieved a card trick called Twisted Sister by John Bannon. I have been praciticing ( more like playing with it on and off for the last 48 hours) and I was wondering if anyone could answer a few questions that could help me.

1. I don't feel really comfortable posting this question here because I afraid of exposure to the trick, so if anyone actually has the trick could PM me. ( It has something to do with the queens).

2. Is there any good free video available to watch the elmsley count?? I feel like I can do it somewhat, but if watch someone else do it then I might get a better idea, or maybe more cofindence.

Thanks

Hi Bowiee - first up a couple of threads that may be of interest regarding TS.

Twisted SIster
Elmsley Count

TS is one of my favourite effects - I still use it in my close up set and it still goes down very well. Feel free to pm me any questions you have.

The EC does take a while to get, and there have been many many threads on the subject (searching "elmsley and count" will probably give you some good results). Mostly it takes practice, but I agree when starting out it would be good to see it being done. I believe it is taught on the Richard Kaufman Basic Card Technique DVD and probably many other places (try searching Kaufman). First up though read through some of the past threads on the EC. Something already said may help.

TS is a fabulous card trick and one of my favourites too.

You can perform it without the Elmsley but it's not as good in my opinion.

Read the posts that bananafish has given you links to but PM me if you can't find the answser that you're looking for.

Likewise one I too use in my tablehopping set. Have on rare occasions done it without the elmsley and does still work but not as powerfully. I'm sure you won't need to PM me with the two guys above already offering but should you need to, the offer is there.

Ya when I first got twisted sister it took me a while to practice. It took me a good while to get the elmsley count down. That was the first time I learned it. But if you practice for a while you will get the hang of it. It comes easy to me now. Its just like anything a DL, the pass etc.... everything takes practice. If you need any advice on it just PM me. I dont want to give away to many details on here. Goodluck.

Once you start getting the Elmsley Count off to a tee, try this one!

Queens out of control is a great routine that is based around the EC and it's one sure way of building up your consistency.

One of my strongest effects! The best thing about the Elmsley Count is to do it slowly! Push off the first card, push off the next two and hold them out toward the punter a bit, pause, pause, and then finish the count with a solid 'three and four'. When you gain in confidence, you can actually spread the two cards slightly, which with Bicycle cards looks like they are both face down.

It strengthens the effect to use the count. Good luck!

Such is the power of sugestion that having followed this thread last week and looked at the reviews I was moved in a CUPS like way to purchase this trick. The fact that it is John Bannon certainly helped push me over the edge.

Well, it arrived on Saturday and I am totally taken with it. I already had the Elmsley, I think it would be a bit weak not using it but still performable, but the whole effect is just terrific. I tried it out on my chief tester (my wife) who is getting a bit sharp now with seeing how things are done and she was completely lost. She challenged me to do it again with the other two queens (thought I must have used magicians choice and she had missed it) and was amazed that I could.

Great trick, it will be going everywhere with me!

Did it last night and really enjoyed it! I always use a married couple and the dynamics are superb. I agree the Elmsley really helps strengthen the effect. Revealing the queens, showing the switch and then revealing the jokers is just so powerful!!!! An Elmsley count with Bicycle cards is even better since on the 'push off two' move, you can spread the two cards ever so slightly since Bicycles have a white border. You can really show the four cards face down before the revelation. Great Magic!!!

I seem to almost always find that the revelation of the queens and the turn to show the red back in the blues and vice versa to be the strong point of the trick.

Revealing the jokers seems to often be 'a step too far' as everyone seems to have not yet caught up with the revelation of the queens, even if you give a decent pause.

Does anyone else find this?

I've had this for a couple of years and have to admit it gets a lot less use than other effects in my pocket.

Don't get me wrong, that's not down to the Emsley, its my favourite sleight and I use it in lots more effects.

I think what bugs me are the Jokers. To me it would be a much better effect if the other cards were blank. Not being a Bike user I don't have a few to swap and try it out.

I always feel that producing all the other cards as Jokers seems to be taking the p*ss out of your spectators.

Just my opinion :?

That's a good way of putting it Tenko and I totally agree.

The Joker bit always seems to be the clincher for me. They like th revelation and the colour switch, but then the jokers seals the deal. They always say 'how could you possibly have known?'. Not sure what the problem is here.
